This 1973 film features: Paul Testwuide, Patrol Director and Hall of Fame member, Bud Palmer, and Governor John Love. It gives the viewer a behind the scenes look at the Vail Ski Patrol in the early 1970s and details what it takes to be on the Patrol. Out of the 34 members on Vail's Ski Patrol that year, were you one of them?

This footage is significant to our Video Archive because it was released just three years before the tragic gondola accident that took place on Vail Mountain. The video shows what precautions were in place if such an event occurred - and speaks to how the Ski Patrol was prepared on that day.

I started skiing Vail about a year after this. I only needed the Ski Patrol once since then.  I was on Chair 2 near the top of Avanti, when it came to a stop. After a few minutes, it started to move slowly... then stopped again. I could see the top of the lift and saw a small puff of smoke; the auxiliary motor was gone. I had to sit on that chair for about three hours until lowered by rope. It got pretty cold, but, luckily, I always tuck a hat into my pants in back. I was finally lowered down at about 5 in the afternoon, as the sun was starting to set. The big bonus: I skied down the mountain when no one else was there. Scary....but a great run.

'What does it take to be a ski patroller?' 'Well first and foremost you have to be an excellent skier' gah damn right
  • Little did they know that just 3 years later; tragedy would occur on that lift. If it wasn't for their skill and training, it could have been much worse.
