This is an analysis and defense of Mafia 3 which received a mixed critical reception from both players and critics. It addresses common criticisms and provides an analysis of both the story and the mechanics.

I do not own any of the music in the video and use clips of footage from the game that contain music for emphasis of the effectiveness of the soundtrack.

Songs include:
Sam and Dave: Hold on I'm Coming
Bobby Fuller Four: I Fought the Law
Steppenwolf: Desperation
Johnny Cash: Folsom Prison Blues
Freddy Cannon: Palisades Park
Del Shannon: Runaway

  • Incredible overview of terribly misunderstood game. I can tell a lot of thought and effort went into this content. Well done.

I’ve always seen Mafia 3 as less of a Mafia game, but more of a Punisher game that we never got set in Louisiana, and I am a thousand percent ok with that. Also helps to boost this idea when you are able to add Punisher’s clothes in through mods.

So good news for Hangar 13 luckily! The Mafia 1 remake was very well received. I've even seen they've been given awards for having great work environments. Things are looking good for them, hopefully they get to make a new game of their own!

The people who made the most noise about how “repetitive” the game was are the same people who play COD every day. The same guns on the same maps doing the same thing every day. So if you enjoy the task you’re repeating, it’s a non-issue.

Hey so If you're wondering where the time code is to skip the Sal Marcano scene, well apparently Youtube doesn't do annotations anymore so I'm gonna just put the timecode here. 50:38. Sorry, next time I'll just put it on screen in editing.

This game did something special for me. I play games regularly but I rarely focus on them more then youtube. I played the opening and usally when i would put google up and start watching youtube I didn't. I started loving all the details and keep changing up my playstyle. For one district i would be stealthy then the next i would go full rainbow. I know this is weird but usually when i hear racist stuff in games i brush it of but in Mafia 3 I started loving the people who didn't make fun of Lincon's skin colour. Also driving down a street with the street lights lighting up the street and my car. This game looks amazing in my opinion. The game did get repetitive with the districts but sort of like The last of us I played to get the cut scenes. The story is the reward.

Maybe I’m just fanboying here, but I’ve seriously played though Mafia 3 (5 times, working on my 6th playthrough) more times than GTA V, (2 times, somewhere halfway through the 3rd playthrough. Now, I’ve played Red Dead Redemption about 7 times, but still. The story and tone had a way of sucking me in, and not letting me go. I had one friend who complained that there wasn’t a bunch of crazy “strangers and freaks” missions like in GTA or RDR. I asked him, “Your family was just murdered. Are you really going to run around doing random things for people in our town, or are you going to try to get some revenge?” Honestly, the story was so well written that, even after playing it start to finish 5 times, I still want to see Lincoln through his journey from start to finish. Also, for what it’s worth, I had it (on Xbox one) at launch. I experienced a few minor glitches, but nothing totally different than I’d expect to find in a GTA game. I should make a note, I did experience one crash, but that may have been my fault. (Possibly bumped the power button with my cord while standing up/moving and just not realized it.) I’m sad that this franchise probably won’t get another installment. Then again, I was also hoping to get a spin-off that tracked Donovan on his own mission to hunt down the.. well, I won’t spoil it. You know what I’m talking about, though.

See thought I wasn’t the only one that loved this game glad to see someone agrees.

Hey man. Im playing mafia 3 right now and i cant believe how bad reviews were for this game. I think mafia is a very solid game, with good visuals, beautiful soundtrack, almost perfect driving and engaging gunplay. And setting... man, what could be better than vietnam veteran coming back and starts a war against mob, this is just a dope scenario, for me personally. Most people complaint about repetitive gameplay, but, as you mention in video, each business you need to takeover has the similar submissions but completly different main missions, with different locations and other stuff to do. It isnt perfect, but im enjoying it, love playing it. Thanks for the video, cant watch it full though, cause im half through the game now)) but when ill be done with mafia i will definitely watch the full video. Well.. keep up the good work and good luck.
  • Not going to lie, it is pretty obvious that a lot of effort was put into this one. Looking forward to more content!

I bought this game recently during the pandemic sale, and was expecting a mediocre game to waste time with. It is not a great game, especially compared to something like red dead 2. But among my constant cynicism if the game i always found myself wanting to keep playing it. As times passed after i beat it, the wisely reviled reputation is so uncalled for. I hate repetitive open world games like ubisofts library where you do constant repetitive copy paste missions. Ive come to realize the type of open world game mafia 3 is always compared to, are actually much worse than mafia 3. I thought i was gonna go crazy being the devils advocate for this game, im glad it has its fans.

I'm definitely late for the party. But I actually watched this video around the time it was released and its crazy how this Critique of a game I haven't even played has carved into my brain to a point I had to come and rewatch it 2019. Can't praise you enough. Please keep doing these types of Critiques/reviews since you are clearly on a class of your own when it comes making people being interested in a very long videos about games they might not even like in the first place 😅
  • Just found and binged a bunch of your stuff some top quality long form video essays!! Subbed!
  • Finally a review that makes sense some people just dont get this game i bought it on the day it released and yea it wasn't perfect and it crashed but goddamn did i have a good time its a hidden gem.
  • While watching this video i noticed a lot of similarites between lincoln clay and frank castle. Vietnam vet, family killed, shot in the head, revenge tale. Idk. Makes me want a punisher skull outfit mod. Gonna go see if i can fine one lol.

A masterpiece! A mature game for people who can appreciate and enjoy a masterpiece and not just run and shoot like a poisoned mouse. Take your time ,enjoy the vibe, the city, dialogues, gameplay! Yes gameplay...the soundtrack!!!! Just a total package of an amazing underrated game with an amazing storytelling and voice acting! I wish the developers would know how much some of us truly love and appreciate this game and their amazing work they have done. Send your review to them to support

I recently played the entire trilogy with the newer Definitive Edition and streamed it to my girlfriend on Discord. We really enjoyed Mafia 2 DE and I had heard really bad reviews about Mafia 3 and almost skipped it. Ended up playing it because my girlfriend insisted to and we enjoyed it so much! Both of us were just confused by the end as to why a game so fresh and so fun like this got such bad reviews. Thanks for making this long essay! A shorter one wouldn't have given it the justification it needed. Incredible work

Thank you for this. New sub. Edit: Very thought out review. Breaking down the story, it's characters, explaining the time and its significance. The game play mechanics and game play loop and so much more and in so much detail. I'm glad I found this channel. I'm playing Mafia 3 (again) and wanted to see if someone out there would see that there was so much potential in this game, obviously the launch wasn't that great. But after the patches and added content, the pros definitely outweigh the cons for this game, with blemishes of greatness that put it above most of its competitors and make it an underdog/ hidden gem. This video does this game justice and it's clear a lot of hard work was put into it. Hope to see more from this channel. Well done 👍🏼👍🏼

Despite the reviews and fallout, I genuinely enjoyed and got immersed into the Mafia 3 world. The story was dark and gritty. It just left a mark on me. Kudos to Hanger 13 for that, I'm not easy to please.
