I have always taken the shifter tower off and dumped 6 quarts in. Towing 17,000 almost daily and the trans lasted 549,000 original miles. Actually going to be changing the fluid today. I've been using Pennzoil Syncromesh and the cause of the failure was 6th gear finally exploded taking out most of the other gears in the trans. I've always drains from the bottom PTO bolt and filled through the shifter tower

I've squeezed 8 quarts of penzoil syncromesh in my NV5600 without any leak of the back seal. Difference between 6 quarts and 8 quarts is unreal. With 8 quarts gears work like in passenger car nice and smooth.
  • I'mma give it a try. Shifting from 4th to 5th is painful and also to 6th. These things are built like tanks. Hoping this will prevent a rebuild but I will if necessary. Could be a rear bearing.

Just did this exact thing what a difference is smoothness of shifting

Hi Bryan, This is Dale with TDS. Good video, but why are the bolts not recessed? They are supposed to be below the surface. I assume they are not all tightened down?
  • @THMXCO
Bryan, when you say shifting was a pain, was it hard to get into gear? Or occasiionaly griding? Or both
  • Is that MTL stuff synchromesh?? I just changed my clutch to a dual disc valair and it is shifting even harder. I used penzoil synchromesh in Jan and I think I was reading to use synchromesh and some kind of anti slip which I don’t have. Anyways I read everywhere if you don’t use synchromesh you will eat up the brass or bronze synchroze. So just curious if it is a synchromesh and if it’s not how has the trans been holding up?

Why didn’t you just drill and tap,a new fill hole in the original cover plate and add a pipe plug?
  • What kind of clutch do you have because I have a dual disc and since it has been installed I hate it its always hard to get it in gear I'm to the point to go back to oem clutch
  • @bennoah1673
Is it the change in fluid level or different fluid that makes the difference?

I’ll spend $400.00 dollars on another set of Fass coolers again, before I buy a $100.00 deluxe PTO cover for 1 quart when you really need more than that and can just as easily pour in via the shift tower.
