Akashi is a coastal city in Hyogo prefecture, only a few minutes by train West of Kobe. Akashi Park is a public park just in front of JR Akashi Station. Akashi Castle (明石城, Akashi-jō) was an Edo period Japanese castle. Originally built in 1619, the former castle was demolished in 1874. Now only two 3-storey towers still remain.
Uontana (Uo-no-tana) is a local fish market and shopping street in Akashi, Hyogo. It is believed to have started around 400 years ago and continues to be a lively spot to buy fresh seafood or grab a bite at one of the many little eateries.
Akashi is famous as a fishing port, especially for octopus. Akashiyaki (明石焼き) is a famous food in Akashi. Akashiyaki is a small round dumpling and is made of an egg-rich batter and octopus dipped into dashi (soup) before eating.
