On the 22nd of February of 1957 Philip Mountbatten, who was consort of Queen Elizabeth, and Duke of Edinburgh was crowned a Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
In the series, as an act of wanting respect from the british aristocracy and bureaucracy.
Great scene, amazing clothing!

"What in a name of sanity have you got on your head?" "It's a crown. I wear a crown now. Crowns are cool!"
  • Everyone taking a dig at Philip needs to remember he was born a Prince of Greece and Denmark. His Grandfather was King of Greece and Philip was in line to rule, but due to revolution he had to flee his homeland at the age of 4. His Grandfather was killed as were many of his uncles. He gave up all his titles in order to marry Elizabeth and in doing so he went from being a respected member of a Royal family to being seen as a beggar prince by most of the Royal Household in Britain. You can't blame him for wanting the recognition that was his birthright.

These two made the show idk how I'll cope with different actors playing them
  • The Queen looks very reluctant to give him the title of Prince, but he had to renounce all foreign royal titles when he married Elizabeth. He went from being a Prince of Greece and Denmark one day, to being an ordinary Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He was then made Duke of Edinburgh by King George VI. He was essentially doing the duties of a Prince of the United Kingdom without the title for ten years. Phillip might come across like a prick, but he earned the title.
  • Claire and Matt are conveying a lot of messages and emotions even without uttering a single word. Great actors!

This whole scene can be summarized in this '' Fine, we got you your pony, are you finally going to stop whining? We have places to be at''
  • Phillip is a very proud man in an era where the man is still supposed to be the head of the household. And he's married to the Queen. THE QUEEN. His children don't even have his surname. Now by modern day standards it would probably not be a huge deal, but he must have felt some degree of de-masculation and shame at the time. And to top it off everyone hates him and thinks he's petulant, even though he has made several sacrifices to be with Elizabeth. I bet it drove him bonkers.
  • Wow, this scene is just incredible! The emotion Elizabeth portrays. Her reluctancy, her annoyed face, how she sits before him, the anger she tries to hide. Then when I thought I was never going to feel bad about Philip he starts to look around and see the face of the aristocracy staring at him, knowing they will never accept him as one of their own.

1:46 Philip stands side by side thinking he is now equal to Elizabeth. 1:48 She sits first, asserting her independence and authority. 2:02 The Prince is alone. 2:10 Faced with an Aristocracy that will never accept him as their own.

who is here after the prince philip died to remember him with this amazing scene?

I'm setting aside the fact that it's probably not at all historically or realistically accurate, and focusing on the narrative. Here, he is portrayed as finally getting what he's been whining about, an equal footing, being made a prince and having all the titles, but realizing that nothing has really changed still. And he looks like a child who has whined and whined until the exhausted parents have given in, but still give him the patronizing looks. This scene...it's hard to put into words, because it portrays in cinematography what words can't.

I don't watch the show but there is major "eye acting" happening in this scene. Very intense.
  • When he wears the crown, the Cape, holds the sceptar, and sits down to look at everyone, he truly realises that what he asked for made absolutely no difference.

Philip's look at the end of this scene, HURTS ME. Mentally and physically. I feel his emotions.

These people look more like they're attending a funeral instead of a crowning.

It's amazing how people came to regard him because Phillip has a waaaay more impeccable lineage than Elizabeth. A descendant of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, King Christian IX of Denmark, Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and various German princes, Phillip is a prince by birth and by blood. By contrast, Elizabeth is only half royal. He was approved of for her because of his impeccable lineage and no throne of his own to inherit. And it wasn't just his royal titles that he had ti give up, but his actual career. Phillip had an outstanding naval career, had men under his command and was rising fast. All of that came to stop when King George died. Phillip lost all that he was, and forever to be simply the queen's consort.
  • It is scenes like this that show Philip truly was an outsider. That’s why he identified with Diana in S4. He’s been in her shoes and knew how lonely it was.

Who ever did the music on this show, knew what they were doing. This is the kind of music that is played to a royal's life.
