Ford pulled a fast one on us after almost 2 decades of the dana super 60 front drive axle in all superduty trucks now most as of 2023 and 2024 model years are the new M235 axle. The new m235 axle is weaker and much like the dana 50 is a scaled down dana 60 and uses its axle housing and outers but with weaker internal parts.

I didnt realize this when i bought my truck and im disappointed to find out it is both weaker and dana 60 locker/ differential options do not fit.

There is no support for this axle as of now and because its all different you would need to upgraded to match the outgoing dana 60 (m256 axle).

The only trucks we have find in 2023 and 2024 to be fitted with a dana 60 (M256) is the tremor and the f450. The f350 drw has the downgraded axle regardless of package as well as F250 and single wheel F350.

Thanks for watching, sorry for the bad news

The 23/24 Tremors have the M235 as well. Confirmed on the Tremor forum I belong to. One of the big reasons I picked a 22’ 7.3 Tremor. Ford also shrunk the water pump for the 7.3 in 23’. That’s probably for fuel economy reasons. Less pumping losses/load on the engine with the smaller water pump.
  • I am about to order a 2024 F-350 and just found this out the last couple of days. I read a lot of forums last night and multiple people posted pictures of 2023 Tremors with the new M235 axle and not the 2017-2022 M256 Super 60. Also some models appear to still have selectable hub lockouts but depending on build date some models will now only have a single selectable lockout hub on one side of the front axle. Bizarre change given the reliability of the M256 Super 60.

Man, thank you for this information. I'm sick at home in my robe fighting this darn covid crap and I had to go out to my shop in 17 degree weather in my slippers and climbed under the front of my 2023 F350 to see how many bolts on the cover and I counted 12. I couldn't slide my half naked body underneath the front valance to see the other two bolts which I'm sure are there. I'm not very pleased to know Ford did this to their trucks. I run the stock 20" wheels and 34" tires and will probably only tow and do little off roading. So hopefully the M235 will hold up.

This is my first Ford Truck, first 3/4 ton truck. I come from a history of 1/2 ton Chevy's and Rams. I bought a 2023 F250 with the 6.8L gas just this past December and trying to learn as much as i can about the drive train. I've grown up hearing that Dana 60 front end was pretty solid. She's probably going to be just fine for what i'll be doing with her. Mainly into RV travel trailer towing around the 8,000 LB mark. Like the technical mechanical discussions on these rigs, thank you for providing info!

A-10’s Air Force only. I did 21 years in the USAF. Sad fact the brass wants to get rid of them. Army, Marines and Navy SEALS love them for ground protection

Have you researched the Bronco Raptor rear locker to see if that interchanges into the front of the 2023 super duty? I think it may be a possibility.
  • Had no idea when I bought my 23' F250. I've got the weaker axle in the front but the M275 on back. I have the 7.3 XLT premium which has the higher GVWR and tow rating
  • I believe the idea is that the pinion/ring gear geometry on the 50 makes it a strong as a 60. Idk how true that is

Seems like my F-350 has a Dana Super 60 axle. I think my Excursion has a Dana 50. It is noticeably smaller.
  • @jackpitw
To clarify-- the 2024 F350 SRW w/ Tremor should still be the D60/M256 ?
  • @DerekDunifer
That's a big issue especially for those who want to put bigger tires on and do any off-roading.

As much as we love American HD trucks and made in the USA products, you have to admit the domestic manufacturers have to cut corners / costs where ever they can when their labor costs increase!!! The UAW labor costs are above market wages because there are other manufacturers that do not have the UAW labor contract and their pay is lower than those that have UAW workers. So if you want to have the made in the USA products and support the UAW, then that has to come at a price!

New axles are failing and being recalled aluminum housing dumb idea.
