Korg vs. Behringer MonoPoly | LFOs & Oscillators: SVU Edition

Published 2021-02-28
Are clone-based devices especially heinous? Let's call in the Synthesizer Victims Unit to take a look at this case-- Behringer's new clone of the Korg MonoPoly (which is a synth Zach recently took a look at for its own underrated nature). The MonoPoly is a unique synth for several reasons, including its usage of 4 distinct VCOs, its unorthodox effects section, and the voice section. Behringer seems to have cloned this synth successfully, but how do they sound? Take a listen and let us know what you think!

I watched Kebu’s video where he compares the sound of his Behringer Monopoly to 2 of his Korg Monopoly and I was shocked to hear that there was way more differences between the sound of the two Korg Monopoly than between his Behringer Monopoly and the Korg Monopoly he uses in his studio setup. So I think it’s simply impossible to perfectly match the sound of a vintage synth with a modern synth since there’s not even 2 of those vintage synths that sounds exactly the same.
  • That intro is awesome. Great synth at a great price too. It's a no brainier imo. I will likely get one at some point.

I like these reviewers, very informative. Prices for the original are going to skyrocket after this...
  • @LeoMrz
When playing with the VCF cutoff and resonance I noticed a deeper sound on the Korg, but for the price and the features added, I'd go for the Behringer. Great review

Great videos. I would love to see you guys do a prophet 5 Rev 4 vs Rev 3. Cheers.
  • @cnfuzz
Good video , you picked out the edges of its soundspectrum nicely, behringer allways sounds brighter , should sit in a mix better than the vintage one
  • @biggrime
1st of all thanks for this video. Mad props to you. I don't care if the behringer sounds exactly as the korg. I never owned the original sl as soon add i can. Im Getting one
  • Man, they sound far more different than I would have anticipated, based on my experience with previous Behringer clones. They must have faced some more difficult challenges in recreating the circuitry. The original sounds far more pleasing to my ears in this demo. Nice work, your videos get better every time!
  • Behringer Monopoly is a beast! I had 2 and now the 3rd. A pearl as a tweak-therapy! :person-turqouise-waving:

The only question I am left with after this video is, how to age a synth? Is it just a pipedream?
  • @pizzagogo6151
Cool comparison thanks! I would have bought one of these instantly.....except Behringer didn’t bother updating it with presets...which makes it a dealbreaker for me; sounds great though!. Ps could you maybe do an Alesis andromeda? I’ve never had the chance to play one and they still have a lot of hype (& high price) attached to them I’d like to see your 2021 perspective if you can get your hands one😁
  • The ensemble circuitry in the original Monopoly is part of the magic of the Monopoly more than a lot of the other factors involved. The filters are a lot different also. But I feel like the ensemble in the original is what gives the original Monopoly that beautiful sound. It spreads the stereo field further out to the left and right then the one that is built into the behringer version. It's like the chorus inside of the Juno 106, that chorus is magical

Clone a vintage synth? NOOO!!!! Clone a vintage guitar pedal? This is the best thing ever!!!! The logic of some people make no sense to me
