i remember this episode feeling three times longer than 11 minutes--its actual running time--because i felt so much older by the end of it. and i remember this episode meaning something more than all the ones i had watched before, because it screamed a sense of realism that adventure time had never reached before. it talked of self growth and finding an inner peace, ideas that were so foreign to me as a kid... but the older i grow, i associate these shows with my emotional growth, and i couldn't be more thankful.

It's crazy how a cartoon from our childhood hits damn hard that my mind went blank a couple seconds. I used to watch adventure time for fun as a kid i didn't really look for a meaning to the show, but now i realized how meaningful the show can be. Thank you for the awesome vid

Maybe it was just to keep the video shorter, or more simple, but I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about Finn's threads. Possibly, in my opinion, one of the greatest examples of symbolism in cartoon history is the juxtaposition displayed three times in the episode, slowly leading towards a final point of development and growth. At the beginning, Finn is a childlike adventurer, though experienced he tries to leave a thread behind to follow back in case he gets lost. This doesn't work obviously, because Finn falls immediately. Then, he finds a thread in the maze, seemingly left by someone who had the same idea as him, but it just leads to a trap, as symbolism that you can't rely on something designed to go backwards as a way to go forwards. Then, as he leaves the treehouse, he notices an errant thread coming from his shirt and breaks it, symbolizing that Finn has learned that backwards is the wrong way to go, and the only way out of a bad situation is to keep moving forward, leaving behind the problems. Even if the problems are your friends, you can meet up with them again on the other side, when something's different.

I like how Finn faces the whole episode without ever losing hope or spending a second upset at the situation. He just faces it down balls to the wall, and briefly acknowledges how traumatic it was at the end lol

My parents always laughed at me, wondered why i watched that goofy, silly child's cartoon. i'm 21 now, and this show has influenced me through nearly every phase of my life it taught me lessons, it taught me that losing people isn't always bad, and that growing up is allowed to be a slow process it taught me that there are times for fun, and times to drop the toys and get serious.

This was a fantastic breakdown of this episode.
  • The Hall of Egress is one of the best episodes of any show I’ve ever seen, that shit was surreal, introspective, and so damn real. Straight up unreal how they presented this in such an understandable and emotionally resonant way in just 11 minutes. Astounding tbh, it’s something I’ve always admired about the show

Finns character development is so good like he goes from immature kid into to a mature adult.

every time i saw this episode as a kid i was hit with a sense of dread and emptiness. i couldn't understand why finn couldn't escape, why he couldn't get out of the temple, and i'd always end up in tears. this episode still makes me cry, and i think i get it now. as we grow we have to learn there are challenges that you have to face on your own, and that has always been so terrifying to me. watching it now, seeing finn tread through this, never giving up hope is truly awakening. i get why i always wanted to be like him, confident. he's still scared, but he acknowledges those feelings and works through them. he is truly one of my favourite protagonists.

i love adventure time because it works perfectly as a kids show, but doesnt ever stray away from mature topics. it can do both things whenever it feels like, instead of being purely one or the other. i think that's why it works so well with its lessons, a kid can go into the show expecting silly fun, and every so often will be taught something very important along the way without even realising it
  • I’m in tears, life’s been really fucking rough for me recently, I left a toxic relationship, got stuck with the lease to our old place, which i’m no longer living at, my dad got covid and Christmas as well as New Years has been ruined, I’ve got strep, and I can’t work which I really need to in order to pay the rent for this place so I don’t go to collections, i’m 22 next month, this videos is the positive voice I’ve been looking for, thank you. You may have saved someone’s life with this.
  • Finn almost been through so much you lose track and it flattens out. Like that Puhoy stuff too.
  • adventure time is the best childhood cartoon you could ever get imo. Like the lore, message, foreshadowing, and humor, everything is just so unique among other cartoons like no other. Adventure time will always be the no.1 cartoon show for me and probably in general
  • Adventure time and other cartoons in that era realty carried my childhood. I wish this generation is able to experience what we experienced.

When it comes to serious issues or choices I need to make, I’d rather not deal with them. I’m busy enough with work and coming home to think about these things is a chore. When it comes to crunch time I start to freak out. I don’t know how to make that first step in making a decision. I talk to people and they say “yup that’s a big decision to make” and that’s all. In a way I’m looking to them to make my mind up. I hate myself for being this useless, not being able to choose. Maybe it’s fear of the unknown or fear of something different. How does one find egress.

I'll be 40 this year. My son will be 14. We've watched Adventure Time together since it began, and this is one of those emblematic episodes that totally embodies how a medium can portray an incredibly powerful message in just the right package. This is as beautiful a philosophical analogy as has ever been created, in my opinion, and you captured the nuance brilliantly. Thank you for this :)

I knew it since the first episode, this show wasn't going to be like other cartoon network shows, and it and sure seemed like it, it's no cheesy cringe type of show, it's a show that tells a story about a person who basically goes through things just like us, and I think that's what the people of the show wanted for us to understand
  • @Aerazar
This show was the reason I still retained my childhood imagination into adulthood, I am extremely grateful for this masterpiece

The kids who grew up with adventure time rather than mind numbing kids youtube videos are the real legends of today
