Bringing you along on our one night backpacking trip on the Auxier Ridge Trail in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge. We highly recommend checking out this area, especially for sunset or sunrise. We had an awesome secluded campsite out on a ridge with incredible views. The loop as we hiked it was 5.5 miles round trip. We completed a loop with the Double Arch Trail, Auxier Branch Trail, and Auxier Ridge Trail. If you hike straight out to Auxier Ridge from the parking lot it’s about 2 miles one way.

Campsite Location: (37.8358385, -83.6736188)

Notes:
-Parking is at the Auxier Ridge Trailhead at the end of Tunnel Ridge Road. The parking lot fills up fast on weekends so make sure to get there early.
-If you plan on camping along the trail you will need to purchase a parking permit from one of the local businesses. Permit prices are $3/1 day, $5/3 days, or $30/annually. Permits are not required for day use. Camping is not permitted in any picnic area or parking area, within 300 feet of any road or developed trail, or within 100 feet of the base of any cliff, or the back of any rockshelter. When camping you will need to hang your food and garbage at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet away from the trunk of the tree, or store it in a bear proof canister.
-Always pack out more than you pack in, it’s our job to keep these trails clean. Always follow good Leave No Trace principles when in the outdoors.

I camped this spot last weekend and it was awesome! If you look straight up towards the northwest you have a perfect view on the Big Dipper. Thanks for sharing the location.

Lovely video; great information. This is the exact loop I hope to take in a couple of weeks with my Australian Shepherd. I just know if I can get him to go up the metal, see-through stairs up to Auxier Ridge. Thanks for sharing this.

  • I love that area. I have been there two times and it is amazing. New follower here. Crow
  • One thing to note, there is a widow maker in this campsite to be aware of. It is right next to a spot that is where it looks like most people put their tents. You will see the base of a small tree that has been eaten away by insects. When we were there, it was eaten about 2/3 of the way through. We set up our tent back further by the trail to stay clear of it.

Would you private message me the exact coordinates to that spot? I'm going in a few weeks and trying to my plan down before we head out
