  • In researching this young man, I found the last words of the final letter home from Paul H. Maynard.    These words remind us that under each cross or star of David, a young man is resting in foreign soil.    "We have had a hard time at this front and will be glad when it is over with, write often and don't forget your old chum."

The Meuse-Argonne Cemetery commemorates those that fell in the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne, or shortly thereafter. The reason the deaths are from Sept-Nov on 1918 is because the battle lasted the last 47 days of the war. None of the Allies really trusted that Germany would quit fighting at 11 -- that is why Ferdinand Foch told all of the Allies to keep fighting till eleven.
  • I was at the Verdun cemetery in 1993, we were there several hours pretty much by ourselves, not sure how many visitors stop by annually, it is very well kept
