Thank you so much - I am over 60 years old and can no longer pull the starter on the mower. My husband pulled out his rotator cuff and can't do it either. We have this old mower and need to be able to start it. I saw some videos on starting your mower with electric drill but I didn't have a grinder to make the shaft fit the socket... well after seeing your video we found the adapter at Harbor Tools (cost 4.99 now) you spoke about. anyway - Yay, the mower started. Took off the cover with pull rope - popped the rivets off, but didn't know size of bolt we needed, so I made a mold out of the grandkids play dough, brought that to the store, found the hex bolt that fit, then used that to find the right size deep drive socket (15/16). Well, got home and it started right up. Died right away, but it's not been run for months. Anyway, thank you so much for your informative video - we've watched others too and will continue to watch you.

My Dad did this all the time. Saved the day for us when we started a small boat motor with drill. We carried the drill with us in zip lock bag.

I've been doing this for years on several different mowers. usually after the string breaks. I used my 18 volt cordless drill with the clutch set high but not to drill. Using the clutch allows the mower to spin faster than the drill after it start and giving me time to pull the drill off.

Very good idea I have used some thing like this my self on an old mower. It worked fine until the mower back fired making the engine turn backward momentarily. The drill was ripped from my hand and I was lucky not to have broken my wrist. I would suggest some kind of clamp to hold the drill. The mower I have now has a built in electric starter . The battery never holds it charge so I took the wiring off and replaced  it with a plug that fits on a  12v drill battery. Works fine now. John

Omg ty so much. I don't have the strength to pull the cord. Definitely going to try this. Many many tears of not being able to start my lawn mower
  • If I'm too lazy to wear gloves i end up with blisters. I always keep a spray can of easy start handy which is a big help. This drill idea is a life saver and especially would like to adapt it for my 2 stroke whipper snipper.

Tearing up your shoulder--I did just that and now I am going to go electric. I think I can drill a hole in the cover. My mower start 1-2 pulls but when it is run is gets harder to start. I have no ID sticker and not numbers anywhere. But I replaced the carb by chance and this is the result I have gottten.
  • I would assume the cover is for people to maintain there fingertips after mowing their lawn
  • The socket adapter alternative is not a "lag bolt", it's a "carriage bolt". The term "lag bolt" is not exactly correct anyway, it's a "lag screw", but it's a name that some people call it that regardless of whether it is correct.

hey Captain; they only have 3 piece sets now. Size(s)1/4 in., 3/8 in., 1/2 in. SKU(s)64605 Brand Bauer Model 1881A-B3 I have a Jacobsen mulcher that is probly 40 years old. Can't find it on Google. And your idea is a lot less expensive than a new engine and lots of elbow grease.

They sell a adapter for your drill so you can do this with your weed eater to . And ps I had to keep my plastic on because that's what held the oil fill on.

Tried this on a rider with a half inch impact and all it did was tighten the nut lol

Yeah it was fun while it lasted my Engine blew up lol it just out of know where caught on fire but more and likely bc I spilled gas's over it by accident and it melted all the plastic including the carburetor but not completely, today I'ma take the head off and see if all that stuff is still good other than the melted plastic lol

my drill turend the wrong way , or, the right way for a drill, turning engine backward fast and now no spark, when turning right way , it ran a bit before. guessing the coil made sparks that went inside it damaged it and heat . melted a wire in it.its a gy6 scooter motor and used a strong big long electric drill.
