Flash games were so fucking wild back then. People used to make games where you tortured people, committed shootings, or just atrocities in general.

Flash horror games could either be cheaply made horror games made to either disgust or scare the player. On the other hand, they could be the most well made horror game that you've never played. There is no in-betweens.

good video, love how this ended up being a look into the lacey series, but this also made me think about the simpler times as a kid messing around on the internet on my dads old computer, some of these games were part of my childhood

ngl the scene in exmortis 2 where the hordes of exmortis came in like an avalanche has always stuck with me, just imagine the pure terror you'd feel if you were in the protag's shoes
  • I canโ€™t believe house of doom never got a sequel. It was definitely the best game in this video.
  • @GloomyHouse
the flash game horror era was awesome at the time
  • @Kyezoar
I'm actually kinda surprised you didn't dive deeper into the more controversial games that'd been around Newgrounds and flash in general that leak into a more horror-esque theme but... this was a fine and awesome selection to watch through!
  • @dyphonix
ive completely forgotten the red room! i remember seeing few low-quality animations trying to replicate the story (but framing it as real to scare kids lol)
  • @chana1298
i love your videos because they always have a nice refreshing execution for like blocked memories for me or things i wouldโ€™ve like as a kid. chefs kiss
  • @Lisespieces68
Great video, you somehow manage to make videos about stuff that i don't really care or think about much, and make it super interesting with your presention and editing style

Oh my god the nostalgia is kicking in hard rn... Back when I was a kid, I'd ALWAYS play these adobe flash-type games 24/7, at home, school, and literally on my Father's work PC at the old hotel he used to work at. It's been my kinda trend to usually play these horror-genred point & click kind of games and god, how much I loved these games during my childhood. Thanks for bringing up most of these games back into the spotlight :3

One flash horror game that I remembered playing was this point and click game where you're in a house, and your goal was to scare a child. I still remember it after all these years because of the loud-ass menu music that scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. Edit: The game is called Scary Sleepover

Solid video, and brought back some serious memories. My only consistent and relatively minor disagreement with your criticisms is you mention low-resolution a lot as a negative, and unfortunately for the time, this was a non-negotiable thing for flash game devs. From 2000 to about 2008-2009, a lot of flash hosting sites had strict limits on what could be submitted, both in size and resolution. It also helps to remember that pre-HD and widescreen, your average PC owner only had a monitor that would do 640x480 or 800x600, and any flash games that were natively higher than this resolution would literally be unplayable on these screens. Not to mention, these times pre-dated major broadband rollouts, so if a flash game was larger than 2-3MB, you'd be waiting a ridiculously long time on it to download before playing. And I totally get they didn't age well, and they all play like crap now, but for the vast majority of us, this is more a trip down memory lane than anything. Either way, solid video and you earned a sub from me, great job!

Lacey's Games is my favorite piece of digital horror in recent memory, I was practically jumping at my own shadow the night I watched it lol
  • Impressive how games like this can be made despite the engine not being entirely fit for it. Really goes to show what passion and creativity alone can achieve.
  • @kholite
ever since ive partially stepped away from roblox a few months ago, i stopped getting recommendations from maple, but now i'm pleasantly suprised by how many videos he's made aside from roblox. i've watched almost every one of them now and i really think there should be more videos like these. keep going!

Great video! Here's some horror flash games I've played but not mentioned in the video: 13 Days in Hell Arrival in Hell Being One series Darkness Desolation Escape from Camp Crystal Lake Ghostscape series Hidden Spirits: Paranormal Investigation (nearly unplayable now) Hostel Killing Floor Icescape series Meat Mansion 1 & 2 Monster Basement series Nightmares of Leia Ray Saw IV (I think) Synapsis (not really horror but does have a creepy vibe) The Last Stand series Vorago
