Haier Portable AC | Buzzing and Not Cooling - FIX

One of the most common problems with a compressor that won't start is a bad run capacitor. In this video I show you how that fixed my son's portable AC problem. Other issues related to an AC compressor that won't run could be refrigerant leaks, burned electrical components, or a failed compressor.

When buying a new capacitor you may not find an identical matching capacitor. It's okay if the replacement capacitor has a higher voltage number. What is more important is to match the capacitance number (uF), the shape of the capacitor (round), and the number of poles at the top (where the connectors go). In my case it was two pole capacitor, which means it had two separate round parts a the top, each with multiple wire connectors.

Take a photo of the way the original capacitor is wired so you can install the new capacitor the same way.

There is no guarantee that changing your capacitor will make your AC cool again. If that does not work, other things you can try include: clean your coils with coil cleaner (see related video link below), check the circuit board for any burned components, check for refrigerant leaks by spraying soap + water on the coils when the AC is on to look for any bubbles indicating refrigerant leaks. If you have your capacitance meter, check the square-rectangular looking capacitor to see if the output is normal or low. When the compressor is running, it warms up, turn on the AC (set it to cool) and touch the compressor with your hand, if it doesn't warm up it's likely dead and needs to be replaced.

Troubleshooting list:
Clean the washable filter.
Clean the coils.
Replace capacitor(s).
Check for leaks with system running using soapy water.
Turn on unit, touch compressor, should be hot if its running.
Turn on unit, listen for fans, should be running.
Turn on unit, touch copper lines, one should be cold (and sweating) the other should be hot if compressor is good.
Visually check motherboard for burned components.
Visually Check wires for any loose connections.
Visually Check connectors for corrosion (rust), clean off any corrosion with wire brush.

Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! youtube.com/post/UgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-… I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!
  • Thank you. I don't hand out Likes to just anyone. Your video was short, concise and to-the-point with bonus tips. While I knew my problem was the capacitor, this took away any guesswork before I start the tear-down.

This was incredibly helpful. The directions and showing us the products to buy and roughly how much plus protection information! Thank you!!! 🙏
  • Cheers Chavez you LEGEND!! Saved me from busting out the wallet for a new portable aircon. It was blowing warm air and the exhaust was not blowing hot air as I touched the duct. Changed the capacitor myself and saw the bubble on the old capacitor that you described on your video. And BOOM! its running again.

You saved the day for me! Followed your guide and now my AC is working great! Thank you so much for making this video!

Oh man you just made my day. Same exact problem. Ordered a new capacitor for 27$ on Amazon and BAM! AC is working again. I was that close of buying a brand new unit just before I've found your vid. I just saved a whopping 550$ :)

Thanks for the video. My DC portable AC has a compressor that is just buzzing. The 35uF capacitor is swollen like yours, cheers.
  • Wow this was really good sadly I bought a used LG 13000 btu portable air conditioner and everything works its turns on but sadly ut doesn't cool and of course LG hust says book a service call bit i cant cuz its used and who knows how much it'll cost to get ot serviced. But if my issue is the capacitor then im willing to see if i can order that part online and fix it myself. I did it w an old treadmill i am sure i can do it on this. Probably the most helpful video i see for over a year now i hope this solves my issue otherwise i waste $400 on a used AC... Careful where you buy things online!!

Thank you for the video. After watching a bunch of crazy stuff, i came across this incredibly helpful video. My haier portable cold/heat unit does rattle and compressor sounds starting, then stops also is very hot to the touch. First it would shut down then drains excessive amount of water now clicks on and off in seconds do you think its similar issue or needs freon if so any idea if i can do that without cutting pipes?
  • @sunkistv
i see that capaciator original says "protected" and the new ones not "protected". is this because there's already trip wire in the cord section? so doesn't need double protection?
  • @damian3182
Greetings, my ac fans go to low speed as the compressor is trying to turn on, I hear some low electrical hum but I can't tell. Everything is clean and I even poured out both trays of water. At this stage I'm going to follow your tutorial here to see if its the capacitor. Is this the symptom your ac was having? Did you hear the fans go to low speed why the compressor was trying to turn on but doesn't?
  • @gregsmith3623
My motor that pushes the heat out of the hose that goes out the window isn't working, would the capacitor cause this? I liked your video and would be grateful for your answer for my problem.
  • @isa5537
Mine blows semi warm air no buzzing. Do you think its still the capacitor if it doesn't cool?
  • @user-je1ch6io2r
Hi I have changed the capacitor the exact way, cleaned the all the coiles but still not cold air, any suggestions please 🙏 Thank you
