“The Other Olympians:” Transgender Athletes in the Nazi Era | Amanpour and Company

Publicado 2024-07-25
Gender and sex in sports remains a sensitive topic. At this year’s Games, trans athletes are subject to stricter rules and regulations than in the past. Although this may seem like a recent issue, the topic goes back to the 1930s. In his new book, “The Other Olympians,” historian Michael Waters details the stories of trans athletes who competed back then. He joins the show to speak about the challenges they faced.

I had hoped that your presentation would have included the contributions that openness in European cities made the hysteria exploited by the populist right in Germany. What factors do you think will make our era different?

Michael Waters states compelling reasons to drop trans women as a wedge issue. Thanks to this program for presenting this book and history on transgender athletes.

No. T people should have happy lives free from fear and judgement. Full stop. If you do not fit into the 2 categories of gender delineated sports, you can't play. I can't play in the NBA cause I'm not 6'2" with a 40" vertical. Technically, I guess I can't play any sport cause I don't have the single minded determination required. Genetics and upbringing is luck of the draw baby, lean into it!!

J'ai montré cette vidéo à mon copain et maintenant il est convaincu qu'il a lui aussi des talents cachés. C'est drôle, mais ça fait peur😻
