Chorus:
Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today, is a day of reckoning
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay, it's Independence Day

To this day.. this very day she had saved so many women's lives... you are a legend Martina
  • Who's with me here on 4th of July 2024! Saw Martina open for Alan Jackson in Philly back in the 90's. Baby, She is a Force of One! 🇺🇸🤠❤
  • Thank you Martina McBride, for still bringing tears to my eyes even at 68 years of age
  • Happy Independence Day! This goes out to all you breaking those generational curses. 🎊 ❤
  • These stories of abusive husbands is so sad. My wife and I got married nine months after our first date. She put her faith and love into a broken Vietnam veteran with anger issues and gave me back my life. I would sooner cut off my hand than ever lay a hand on her. I have never laid a hand on her. She is now in a nursing home with dementia and MS and I love her now more than ever. .
  • I remember when this song first came out. I was married to an abusive husband. This song gave me the courage to walk away from him to never look back. I am so happy that I heard this song thank you Martina McBride for saving my life.
  • I was this little girl. This song gave me hope in a hopeless situation. Roll the stone away! It’s Independence Day!!! Thanks with my whole heart to all who made this song happen! From all of us “weak”.:)

I lived with abuse from my ex-husband and walked out with 3 children and made it by God's grace.

This song gets to me every time. I still sing my heart out to it when it comes on. I'm a survivor of severe domestic abuse. I've had a broken spine, crushed wind pipe, broken bruised ribs, and collar bone. I've been choked out, beaten, tossed down a flight of stairs when I was 8 months pregnant, had my fair share of ICU stays and he would still manage to bail out and come back. He would do worse than before and then I was told if I reported it again I wouldn't even make it to ICU. I had been isolated from my family and friends, lived several hours away from anyone that I thought could help me. But the day the abuse was aimed at my then 9-month-old son (He picked him up and threw him at me like a rag doll) I found the courage to leave. He's the kind of person that changes the doorknobs inside out so when I would get "in trouble" I'd be locked in the room, or while he went to work. I am a firm believer that I would have been dead if I stayed any longer. My son saved my life. I believe that with all my heart. I had to wait until he was asleep, his mother helped me hide my son. I left with the clothes on my back and a backpack with any important paperwork. My siblings drove 6 hours to come to rescue me. I had to force my brother to just drive off after I got in the car and he saw that my eyes were bruised shut and I couldn't speak because my windpipe was crushed. He was so controlling that he drove out those six hours to my family's home with a shotgun to kill me and kill himself. Thankfully my father and brother were both there. This was almost 20 years ago and I still have anxiety attacks and PTSD from the physical abuse, rape, and mental trauma that I endured. But I am a Survivor. He was not a part of my child's life for many years until my son got older and never paid child support. I worked three jobs, went to school full time, became a psychologist to help others that have been through trauma, and continue to do so. I have since gotten married and had two children with the man that is "dad" to my son. HE raised him with me. HE paid for all his expenses, HE loves him as one of his own. That is what a Father should be. Sorry I got long-winded there.
  • I am a 58-year-old male. I have been listening to this song for years. It makes me almost cry every time I listen to it. Putting myself in an abusive female's position. Sometimes it seems like you have to do whatever it takes to stop being abused. My heart goes out to a woman who has to possibly spend the rest of her life in prison to get out of an abusive situation. The man got what he deserved.

23 years ago to the date I’m writing this, I was legally divorced from a very “unpleasant” man. I always celebrate being free of him, it’s my Independence Day. Thank you for this song, it’s so very powerful. Praying for the women (and their children) that are in a horrible relationship. 🙏
  • This song means a lot to me. My dad was very abusive. When I was 12, my mom had acted like she went to work like any other day. Then after my dad left for work, she came back, packed up my sister, brother, and I and we ran. (We had run before, but not very far.) She had sold my piano for the money. We left Houston, TX, and spent days taking a zigzagging route. My mom thought she was just going to have to disappear with us to keep us safe. (This was 1980. It was a little harder to get help back then.) Eventually we rolled into my grandparent's driveway in northern California on bald tires... On the 4th of July!!! We were free! My mom and I don't wish each other a happy 4th of July. Every year, we wish each other a Happy INDEPENDENCE Day!!!

This could have been me,I felt so trapped. First as a child growing up in a abusive family, then later while married to my abusive husband, but I finally escaped four years ago. I'm so glad I didn't succeed in taking my life. I live alone now with my dogs and cat off grid in my airstream in the middle of nowhere and I love it. The freedom to live without all the judgement and abuse is so freeing. I feel like I can breathe. Which I actually can,my asthma is gone, threw away the inhalor And I have learned that I am so strong I can tackle anything that comes my way. The PTSD isn't crippling any more,in fact I go days and even weeks now without an anxiety attack. It's amazing how stress can make a person so sick. Thank you Jesus for giving me the strength to live🙏💪💪
  • 8 months ago I left..don't stay in abuse broke my heart but I'm free and it's my first independence day without all the trauma.. without abuse..let freedom ring

I started working at a country music radio station in 1996, and one of the first "celebrity" encounters I had was when Martina came by to visit our station. I got to sit next to her as she sang "Safe In The Arms of Love" live on our show. It was a helluva thing to see up close. If I ever needed to peel paint from a ceiling, I'd call Martina. Her voice is that powerful.
  • Martina - I took my 14 yo daughter to see you on your recent tour, in NYC. I know it's been a long road for you, in this industry. Thank you for standing strong, being who you are. It means a lot, not just to old guys like me, but more importantly to the younger generations. There were quite a few teens and pre-teens in the venue that night. Wherever you go next in life, may God bless you, and thank you for all that you do.
  • This song gets me every time...I've never been abused but I really love this song's powerful lyrics and the small sense of justice that this poor woman felt must be paid out for her daughter's safety...powerful song writing here...and Martina's voice is just so smooth and powerful !!!!
