I once worked on two cat 399s, clearing them of cosmolene (cooling system and oiling system). They had been in storage at least 30 years. After a 24 hour flush on each one, they both fired up and ran wonderfully.

Proper maintenance is the key. Cat and Detroit have been around for many decades and they’ll run if you take care of them.

It's a D4600. The Bertrands were the winners of the Old Faithful Contest in 2007, to find the oldest generator set still on the job. In 1947, the Bertrands purchased the Cat D4600. Its a 35-kilowatt system capable of producing enough electricity to meet the needs of the homestead, including powering a well water pump used for the familys livestock. The Bertrands bought it from former dealer Oehlert Caterpillar Co. in Colby, Kansas.

I have 4630 Cat generator. It's much older than this one. Mine served a lighthouse of the coast of Nova Scotia. It still works like a new one.

Here's proof that some of the oldest violins play the sweetest tunes.
  • We had 4 of that same model of Caterpillar generators up @ Kulani Honor Camp. We didn't have to rely of HELCO for electricity if we didn't want to. When the prison was built back in the 40's Those Cat Gen Set's ran the facility full time. Good to see there are still gen sets like those still alive & kicking.

Neato! Love the old iron. Bravo for preserving and using a part of our history and heritage!

Wow, that's a twin to our generator. We have just about the same power unit as our backup. Ours is a 1945 US Army PE-196C CAT Diesel generator. We fire it up every six months or when we want to show some one our working antique.
  • Friend of mine has an old caterpillar bulldozer from the 40s that still runs and operates

Been through that part of Kansas, very pretty farmland. Great salvage yard in Colby a few towns over near the Colorado border--everything from model T Fords to late model cars and trucks. All watched over by the yard's siamese cat.

I work on CAT 3520s that run on landfill gas. I try to post a video now and then on my page they’re incredible machines!
