Where did this book come from? I have no idea. I have been making sure that the books on my shelves are complete series all in hardbacks of authors that 'give me joy'. There among the A's I found a book by Eric Ambler, a man I know nothing about, and haven't read. So, I read it. Then I looked Mr. Ambler up. Honestly, his "typical plot" is absurd! I'll keep this book but, not buy any more of his works. Once is enough. High implausibility coupled with amateur detection - without suspicion? Who's going to buy that? Yet Mr. Latimer just rolls along guilelessly. Amazingly, Mr. Ambler's books were quite successful! Wonderful what some early writers could get away with! Still, if you can find a copy, you may want to dip into one of his "thrillers" if you like wrestling with his "a nest of copperheads" plots - taking notes along the way so you don't miss a turn.
