Published 2023-06-14
This is a casual video where I talk about how I realized that I have been masking my special interests. I hope it brings you some encouragement to participate in your interests fully without worrying about what other people think.

I needed to hear this so bad! I love this energy, we really should be able to enjoy the things we enjoy without judgment. as long as its not hurt anybody, why make someone/yourself feel bad for having fun? ty for this vid!

Once again, can’t thank you enough, Rachel 🙌 fellow POC who thinks she might be autistic and have ADHD. (Searching up those keywords is actually how I found your channel!) I can already see by the comments you get on your vids that your channel is reaching so many people who need it, please keep sharing with us! ❤ Also, OMG because I didn’t even realize how much my masking was extending into my special interests! For me, I get obsessive. Like it starts to take over my daily routine. And the interests tend to change so often but what got me is how you said you feel like yours are things that appeal to younger audiences… I felt that! I’ve never really liked a whole lot of “grown-up” shows or activities. I’m really sensitive to a lot of more mature themes. But I’ll watch Wallace & Gromit on replay like there’s no tomorrow 👋😂
  • Thank you so much for posting this I love the “childish stuff too” I totally get it I am the very same way so yea I am right there with you
  • Before I knew I'm autistic, I remember thinking "I never get to talk about what I want to talk about at dinner parties." I recognize that now as masking my autism. We have a nephew (also autistic) who masks less who always ends up talking away about Star Wars at the family dinner and I always listen to him and feel jealous because he seems to be having such a good time. I'd have a ball talking about grammar or fiction writing, especially whatever fiction project I'm working on at a given time (which has basically been the same project for the last ten years -- I finally finished it last summer). While that might not sound like a childish interest, I should probably add that when I say fiction writing, I mean writing for young readers. I almost exclusively read tween or young adult fiction and I'm in my 40's. I love it. That's why I write it. So yeah. I get it. Why shouldn't I talk everyone's ear off about YA fiction at the next family gathering? Look out. (We have a family wedding on Saturday) 😅

My oldest special interest is learning, I did and still do want to learn as much as possible. My primary interest right now is tabletop gaming. I guess my entertainment special interest is Scooby Doo, it's been my favorite TV show since I was 3.

  • Omg I did this with sports in high school. When I was doing track and field I always wanted to get faster but because of my autism and asperger disorder I could never reach my full potential of running faster which prevented me in being the athlete that I visioned myself to be
