Do Not Attempt! Mower Safety!

Published 2017-02-15
This is an old video I made. Its sole purpose was a series I planned on making about the angles/dangers of hillside mowing. Unfortunately I never finished it but have more footage.I tested the limits of this zero turn mower in all directions.
However do not attempt to mow hillsides if you are inexperienced!
Just wished I woulda finished the series :(

Anyway enjoy my funny reaction! Thanks for watching!!

  • Would be wise to have the roll bar up at all times with this kind of slope.
  • I got ya man I also mow for a living and I do a lot of water retention ponds in subdevisions that are way beyond what my hustler super a hyper drive is rated for and most people call me crazy but i live for mowing and in the line of work we do we don't get enough credit so I do apologise because it takes a special talent to do what we do.... mad respect for u And all other mowers that go through what we do every day

I always go straight up and straight down. Especially when it's wet. However I do have a property with a slope leading to a pond. Nearly went for a swim last year. Great video. Really shows the danger we deal with everday.

I'm in the market for a new mower since I spend more time working on my 35 year old John Deere 316 lawn tractor than I do mowing. I feel guilty about giving up on the 316 because it still has some life in it. While ZTR mowers are in high demand I am leaning toward another heavy duty lawn tractor. I'm concerned about the safety aspects of the ZTR with the back wheels tending to slide on inclines as in this video. I've also read occasions where the ROPS system caught a low limb and the ZTR mower front end came up dangerously high. The mowing speed is not a major concern. This was an excellent video that helped me come to a decision.

How steep does it need to be before you put up the roll bar?

I usually mow down hill instead of going up. I learned that when my dad tried mowing up hill with our John Deere lawn tractor. It flipped but luckily my dad didn't get hurt or anything. After that day with bought a Kubota Z231kh and everytime I mow on a hill, I always go down so I don't make the mistake he made.

Great video and courage. Glad you are out getting it done.

I hate hills, almost makes me want to move to Kansas, I dream of flat cookie cutter lawns in neighborhoods so big you can get lost in them lol
  • @bltefft
Maybe circle around to mower down the hills?
  • @Wheel.Estate
So what do you do? Mow parallel? I know cub makes zero's that the front wheels are attached to steering to keep the back for pushing, and front for steering so it doesn't slide like normal zero turns.

I have mowed an inclined drainage ditch with my Z-master and the ground gave way. The mower tipped and slid right into the ditch. I was sitting at probably a 25 degree angle to the ground and didn't roll thanks to the rops bar
  • We do a lot of steep hillside operations and are so glad we have our Ventracs for safe operation on steep terrain
  • @Fun_vr
Gotta have the roll bar up with this slope
  • @rayeyth2550
So true! To many people think they have a toy to show off! But to many others have been hurt or even killed as a result of driving and operating a mower as if it were an off road fun mobile!
  • I think the coming down is better than going up, but I got stuck at the bottom of a swale once because of the decline and know my limitations now.
  • @ToolinAround
I put wheelie bars on the back of mine, keeps it planted on hills and let's me back up without trenching the hill

    Freestyling on the Zero Turn...lol
