Solvang wasn't always the Danish Capital of America. Its controversial past rooted in Native American culture and Spanish colonization play a big part in the town's legacy. Check out fun places to visit in the surrounding area, like Ostrich Land USA and La Purisima Mission State Historic Park in Lompoc!

Oh man! I'm obsessed with your channel and Solvang is my hometown actually! I've lived here for most of my life. I'm actually banned from the ostrich farm that you mentioned, funnily enough. It's always so interesting seeing tourist's perspectives of this place because Solvang is like a mini Disneyland or something to them, but it's suffocating and boring to me. I'm glad you went over the colonial history of Solvang, it's definitely something that a lot of locals ignore, which sucks because Chumash people are still very much still around and having their history be suppressed or just replaced with "Oh look, Danish pastries!" is obviously really sad and troubling. I'm glad you mentioned that. This was a good video! Keep up the awesome work.
  • Man, I thought they just had good fudge! Seriously though, I love your videos (not just because you’re my son and I think you are AMAZING), but I learn a little something with each one! Keep up the good work!!

One of the “must see” places to visit when you drive up the coast. I visited many times in my childhood; time to see it again!

One thing that wasn't mentioned was that the area has amazing wineries, like at least 50 of them as well as at least that many tasting rooms...I think Solvang has 12 tasting rooms as well as a very cool "speak-easy" brewhouse called the "Backroom." Solvang Brewery is also really good...
  • Great informational video! We would love to visit Solvang! We are a Danish-American couple who just started a Youtube channel! 😀

Imagine going to Denmark after being at Solvang thinking that’s how Denmark is.

So glad I found this channel. I’ve lived in California my whole life and didn’t know there were so many hidden gems in the state. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
  • I live in Solvang. Its pretty boring, not gonna lie, but your video was good. There’s actually a park here called “Sunny Fields Park”, which makes sense when you think about the danish meaning of Solvang. The best places to go in the Santa Ynez Valley in my opinion are Los Alamos, Nojoqui Falls, and Figueroa Mountain (the actual mountain, not the restaurant).

I'm a Florida boy but my Dad moved the rest of the family to Santa Maria when he got transferred to Vandenberg (he was a Radar Guidance Engineer and worked for GE)...I stayed in Florida but visited many times...Solvang was always our favorite side trip (at my request). It really is a magical place and a great place to spend a day.
