Drinker's Chasers - That Disastrous Superman Reveal

Published 2024-05-12
James Gunn's first official image of his new Superman didn't exactly go down well with fans. In fact, its become the object of mockery throughout the internet. But is it simply a misunderstood take, or does it point to bigger problems with Gunn's DCU?

Superman looks like a depressed construction worker getting ready for a job he hates at 4 am...

I will NEVER forgive Hollywood for NOT giving me a Cavill Superman that was a positive and happy Superman. He was so PERFECT. If only he had been given a script where Superman actually LIKED being Superman.

Remember when Cavill said the new Superman would be patriotic, positive and uplifting, then he was fired. Remember that? Now this Gunn sneak peek.

Generous interpretation: Superman's having a Mr. Incredible moment. "No matter how many times you save the world, it always manages to get back in jeopardy again. I feel like the maid. I just cleaned up this mess, can't you keep it clean for ten minutes?!"

Guy has that depressed, defeated Luke Skywalker Last Jedi 1000 yard stare.

What we wanted: Alex Ross painting of Superman smiling as he rips open his shirt to reveal the S.,..what we got:"sigh, gotta make the donuts, again...."
  • @hufemeve
a brand new already-defeated looking Superman.....
  • It looks like someone asked an AI to draw "brooding Superman" and then tried to replicate that with a real actor, a store-bought costume, and Adobe Photoshop.

It looks like he hates his 9-5 job. That’s something we do. We don’t want to see that in our superheroes

So this is what the Temu version of Henry Cavill looks like, I see...

Can't take a 50 years old dude acting like a teenager seriously. James Gunn, Taika Waititi and Zack Synder.
  • @weasalpj
He's perfectly captured the "I hate my job" look that Superman is renowned for..... Oh wait a minute!
  • @AHeroAlmost
Cavill was perfect for the role .. Huge mistake not giving him another shot at it ..

If they had replaced the image in the window with a solid block of Chroma-Key green or old blue screen it would have told viewers it was a behind the scenes image and it wouldn't be taken so badly.

The problem is, this is something we should NEVER see! Especially with a laser in the background, he would be moving so quick he'd NEVER be in focus. There has to be some indication he's moving at an insane speed or he just seems like he doesn't care.

Drinker is right. We dont need another Taika Waititi like Superhero movie where you have an apocalyptic setting and the hero makes jokes. Superman was always a serious hero who carried the whole weight of the earth on his shoulders. Literally.

You know the people that dress up outside the Chinese Theater in Hollywood and pose for photos and "ask" for tips, who look like they sleep in said costumes? This guy.

Very clever reveal, that isn't how the suit will look during the film, nobody knows the context of the scene, people need to chill over a still image jesus.

The depiction of Superman in this photo seems to portray him as a reluctant and a sad character. DC already has a dark and brooding hero. His name is Batman. To morph Superman into a morose character simply makes him redundant. There is a reason, nearly 50 years since Christopher Reeve first donned the tights, that people still look so fondly on his portrayal of Superman. He represented the exact antithesis of this cynicism. It is time that DC recapture the optimism that Reeve so fully embodied when they portray Superman.
