How to fix Cherokee XJ broken transmission cross member bolts - crossmember

4 years... still going strong. No rust issues other than the normal Michigan Salt....

95 xj, installed zone 3 inch lift. Installing skyjacker Transfer Case Drop down. Bolts snapped off like butter, even with using PB Blaster and breaker bar and going slowly. Spent a long time trying to drill out bolts. This is easy way instead of removing seat and carpet and going from top. Afterwards I will weld a piece over hole. Thank you for this idea.

Good Video! I repaired a cross member by drilling a hole on the side of the frame like you did - large enough to clear the head bolt. Then I feed a piano wire through the bottom mounting area up to the hole I drilled. Used a clothes hanger wire to pull the piano wire back for it took me a few times. I taped the end of the new bolt to the wire and pulled it to the location. Also, put a drop of oil so the bolt and tape would slide through. Added a lock nut and lock washer. The Manufacture - JEEP - should have had engineering change and tooling change to service to replacement nuts and bolts as required. Take care!

I had that happen today. Only able to get one bolt to come out. I drilled through the piece of iron that went to the inside of the frame and bolted it up. I got one original bolt back in.

good idea. God I hate how they made the bolts out of chocolate on these things.

I wouldn't pass nys inspection if i did this im gonna try something different wish i could.

Why not just weld a plate back over the hole?

wish it was this easy for me i did the same thing and still cant get to the bolts its like boxed in behind the unibody
