Purchased the Cummins Onan P2500i Inverter generator. Follow up review and impression of this product. Does it stand up to Honda? My thoughts on this product.

Bought one a couple years ago for work. Right out of the box it wouldn't hold steady RPMs. It did ok under a load, but still not right. I probably put 30 hours on it or so then it sat around for a while, the warranty was up and I never got it fixed. The next time I went to use it, it started fine, but then gas started leaking out around the carb. It sat for a few months then I got it out to see where the gas was leaking from. This time it didn't leak. Maybe the float was stuck when it was leaking. Still idles rough, surges up and down.

Always run a small load for about 20 minutes and you will have no problems getting it started
  • Thanks for the review. I'm thinking about a portable generator for my rv camping. I do have a Cummings Onan commercial generator for the motorhome, but most of the time I don't need that much power. My understanding they use a lot of gas which comes from my MH gas tank. Having this would be more efficient for little stuff.

Try turning the switch dial to the point to "right before it shuts off" position. Then give it 2-3 minutes. Should run fuel out of carb and shutoff. Most gens have that feature. People just don't realize it.

Onan is a great name. The P2400 seems to stumble a bit as it is running. Would you buy this model again based on your experience or would you choose something different; say a Briggs and Stratton 2400 P or maybe a Honda EU 2200i?
  • John Dewey. Good review. Do you think this gen set would run a plug-in type chainsaw rated at 14amps? I don't know what the figure for the Watts.
  • Bought two of these to parallel. One is fine the other has been junk since purchased. Tried all of the tips - loosen gas cap drain carb each time, Stabil, Carb cleaner, put a level on it when using, keep out of sun, change oil, no ethanol gas. Great tips unless product is junk. Has been back to RV dealer and no help. Local generator shop not allowed to work on it by Cummins. Cummins dealer an hour and a half a way has failed to fix it. They have problems with carbs and circuit modules which their tech acknowledge. Labor is $187 an hour and Cummins warranty is voided if they determine you disassembled anything you're]self you you have to take it in. They told me more labor too much better to buy a new one.

Anyone have this run out of gas and run like trash? Sounds like a air bubble in the line
  • I HAVE THE WESTINGHOUSE IGEN2200 AND THE IGEN 4500, THE WESTINGOUSE AND CUMMINS ARE THE SAME EXCEPT THE OUTER SHELL. WESTINGHOUSE IS MUCH CHEAPER. JOHN, YOU NEED A PORTABLE MIC. I CAN'T HEAR YOU AT ALL.
