Riding Lawn Mower Won't Start? - Try This!

Published 2022-04-24
Step by Step!

Today we'll be working on a Troy-Bilt riding lawn mower that won't start.

We worked on this riding mower last year, when I had to replace the starter.

Kohler has 3 generations of starters for these SV series engines, and only the 3rd generation starter should be installed, due to the previous generation starters having significant design flaws.

If you'd like to watch that video, click here:    • 3 Generations of Kohler Starters for ...

Once I get it started using some carb spray, it runs perfectly smooth.

So what's the issue? Well, this mower has a speed control lever (that adjusts the engines RPM) that also has the carburetors choke cable integrated into it.

Over time, this cable can shift sideways from the spring tension (and also from the vibration of the engine).

If this cable is not properly adjusted, when you engage the choke lever on the center console (near the steering wheel) the choke plate inside the carburetor will not close fully.

If this choke plate does not close fully, your engine most likely will not start when cold, as the engine needs the carburetor to produce a rich mixture (less air and lots of fuel) to start.

Follow the steps in this video, and you'll have your riding mower fully operational once again!

I just got my design-flawed-choke yard works push mover and you guys did the best work ever. Highly recommend anyone get their repairs done here if you live in the area. 👍
  • WOW this video really took off, kinda surprised you did not get more comments with this many views. As usual a very good straight forward tip that just may save a viewer mucho dollaro as Bruce Pender would say in Mexico on a no start condition. See ya next week looking forward to what is coming.

Excellent video, Briggs had issues on the Craftsman mowers the same as this one you had. Thousands of mowers left the factory with the chokes not adjusted correctly. I have repaired several last year alone. Thanks for great video's.

Got it! I like when things are simple to understand quiet sure this will come up one day, Thanks for info!
  • Good explanations! I'm sure it will help lots of folks. I inadvertently did that repair in the process of cleaning a carburetor on a Husqvarna mower that had been flooded. When I replaced the carb it still didn't want to start and that's when I found the cable out of adjustment. It starts and runs beautifully now.
  • Another good informative video Jake. Looks like that rider needs some TLC. Thanks Cheers. Rick

My older JD 165 with 12hp kawasaki has a very similar set up and I ran across this issue last winter.... great video.

Your videos are very informative. Keep up the good work! I'm a mechanic also, but on cars and light commercial vehicles. Based in Ireland.

Just fixed a Koehler KT (7000 series) this week that the choke wasn't closing on. Have seen this more than once on these Kohler engines.

Good day Jake. Last week starting watching & fell a sleep. Yes show Wayne. Also watch video on water in gas again. Thanks My MTD is kinda a hard starter, I might have to look into that.

Super clear explanations with hands on examples with the trouble shooting. This is the best. Well, you are the best.

Another well explained video. Liked the idea of using a marker. Will add that to my bag of tricks. Hope its okay to chime in on QNTMXIII.
  • @Tommyr
I like the way you explain everything. Thanks for that.
  • @BrucesShop
Well that seemed like a simple fix. Thanks again EP.

Good video. It actually gave me a possible clue as to why I have a Kohler 27hp that is running super lean.
