I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I took an art class in college where the anology of light hues (colors) was taught exensively - the study of colors fucused on how light is refracted, relected and absorbed. This was studied to create several effects with a piece of art. The professor was an avid bass fisherman - when I found that out, we talked in great detail about the correlation between colors, contracting colors using the color spectrum chart and the importance of how to oberve light energy in our enviroment. Key to Professor Robert's teaching was matching contracting colors from opposite sides of the color spectrum chart - reason: one contrasting color serves to make the other more visible than if the color existed alone or with another non-contrasting color. Additionally, Professor taught contrasting colors are even more visisble in areas where light refraction is exaggerated such as a sandy bottom or concrete structure. After the five page essay we had to write about the analogy of colors and assigment to create an art piece to support our thesis - you are spot on. David Frits mention something on this topic as well. Thanks for having classy discussions, Matt.
  • I most definitely believe that contrast helps trigger fish into biting. The biggest fish I've ever caught came from contrasting lures like a Mepps Black Fury (Blade blade w/ yellow dots). If you look back at the old Daredevil spoons, you'll see mostly red with a white stripe or black with a white stripe. When I get a new crankbait, I actually paint the top with dark fingernail polish (usually dark purple with sparkles). I believe fish hone in on the top of the bait more than any place. That may be why the contrast at the top seems important. I also use lots of dyes on soft baits to add contrast.

The contrast makes sense to me because of most fish species have a light & dark to them. Plus regardless of water clarity or lighting conditions, one of the 2 either light or dark will stand out more for the fish to see.
  • As a brand new bait maker taking this on a professional business level i find all of this extremely helpful. And it all makes sense.
  • @BassFishingHQ
I thought the contrast subject was super interesting too!
  • @robhulverson879
Agree 100% Matt. That new book you bought also confirms what you mentioned about contrasting colors getting bit twice as much. I sold my copy for $400 5 years ago, but the information in “Knowing Bass” is worth its weight in gold! Really enjoy your channel and thanks for all the great content.
  • Matt, I’m always thankful for your videos. You drop so much useful, insiteful info. Thanks for sharing so much with us
  • Makes complete sense now that I think about it. Great advice here, thanks!
  • @user-cz7ql5jb8j
I agree 💯. That's why black back chartreuse is such a great color
  • @anthonybenoit222
Thanks for the information you shared. Can’t wait to put it to use
  • @FishinWithJoeG
One of my favorite baits to throw is a roostertail I always get strikes from bass on them and I think it has a lot to do with the color contrast that the spinning spoon creates
  • @rvfishingyet
Great insights into how Berkley designs are working. You certainly see the contrasting colors pan and bait fish. Cool stuff Matt
  • @user-ro5rl5et5i
as a kid/ teen- used to throw that black back-silver side rapala floater alot- still got a few in the box& they still get good fish.
  • @sheepdad556
very interesting info. I'm believing the science on this one. Thinking of ways to incorporate some contrast in the solid color swimbaits that I run the TUSH with now.. Great Vid Matt👍
  • @user-uj6bb6jg6o
Sounds like I need to try a two tone swim bait on your Tush rig to catch twice as bass. Thanks for the new rigs you came out with I have all of them and more on the way. Thanks again .
  • Makes sense to me when trying to trigger a feeding response. During the spawn solid pink, fl. orange, and chartreuse work well to trigger strikes also.
  • @stevesmith7164
Good video Matt the Daredevil spoons have color flash when it wobbled worked great when I used it I. The 70s. Make sense that would work😊
