the story is set quite far in the future, in an apocalypse-type setting, so the current countries don't really exist as we know them, but ji-yeon was born and raised in south korea, and left for japan when she was a teen, where she became part of fumiko's gang/group/whatever you want to call it

actual backstory--------------
- after a nuclear disaster + chemical warfare leaves the world decimated, along with the effects of climate change + industrial pollution, humanity is on the brink of collapse (D:)
- the landscape is a wasteland, except for a couple rumoured safe havens (one of which is in the centre of japan)
- ji-yeon at first lives with her brother in south korea, but their situation becomes v bad so the decide to attempt to cross to japan
(to survive the toxic fumes in certain zones, everyone has to wear gas masks)
- before they reach the coast, ji-yeon and her brother get ambushed and in her fight to escape, ji-yeon's mask gets damaged and her face becomes scarred from the exposure
- she runs as far as she can to escape the toxic zone so she doesn't y'know- d!e but gets separated from her brother
- she finds a boat full of people about to cross to japan, she hopes that he is there and ends up stuck on the boat unsure of where he is
- she finally makes it to the 'safe haven' half alive where fumiko finds her and they make a deal - fumiko will find her brother, if ji-yeon helps her

the effects of nuclear disaster and chemical warfare + pollution have led to the world being full of 'toxic zones'. to travel anywhere gas masks are required. most areas have become unlivable. at the very beginning, people flooded to certain areas, which became highly protected 'safe zones'.
the safe zones are huge walled cities, controlled by powerful corporations trying to profit from people's desperation. a government remains in place, but those in high positions are entwined with the corporations. there is high security and surveillance :0 also a huge black market
travellers from across the world seek the 'safety' of these places, but when they arrive realise they may have been better off trying to survive outside the walls.
