Seeking Searchers For Missing Person Dennis Burton in Death Valley/ Panamint Mountains 3/2/24

Published 2024-02-28
The Wonderhussy Report 2.28.24

A woman recently emailed me, asking if I knew anyone who could take her out to Panamint Valley to look for a missing person named Dennis Burton, whose truck had been found abandoned with an empty gas tank in Goler Wash. Cathy runs an organization called the Fowler-O'Sullivan Foundation, which searches for missing hikers even after official Search and Rescue efforts have ended. We ended up rounding up a group of dedicated locals, and headed out to Goler Canyon to see what we could see -- and to set up a base camp for the official, methodical grid search this coming weekend (3/2-3/3/24).

If you are interested in joining the search for Dennis Burton the weekend of March 2-3, 2024, the base camp will be placed at or near these GPS coordinates:35°52'49.1"N 117°11'00.1"W

Drive to Ballarat, CA, then turn right (south) on Wingate Road and follow that along the base of the Panamints toward Coyote Canyon Rd./ Goler Wash. until you see a big camp of several vehicles, including Unkle Gnome’s yellow FJ and Linda’s blue Jeep.

There is NO WATER and there are NO FACILITIES onsite — so please come prepared with EVERYTHING you need to dry camp in the wilderness. There is no cell signal, but there will probably be Starlink/ Wi-Fi for emergency comms. Be advised!

Looks like the weather is taking a nasty turn this weekend -- but as far as I know, they are still planning to be out there searching. So if you do decide to go out and help, just be careful -- and be prepared for some seriously nasty winds!!

Donna, Dennis Burton’s wife here. Cannot begin to say how grateful I am that Cathy and the Fowler O’Sullivan foundation are out looking. This weekend will be my first “dry camping” trip in about 25 years. Thank you to everyone!

Thank you for making this video. Dennis is our friend. We searched for him last spring. It’s very sad situation. We appreciate all this organization is doing.

w/h Drones would be a must for next weekend......wouldn't they? God bless Kathy, and all the searchers, everyone bring plenty of water.

Thousands of images have been searched from drone flights with no luck. An incredibly sad story of someone suffering from dementia who may have felt so scared and confused.

All the best in your search this weekend!! Stay safe and hydrated!!

A sad tale. Too bad the family didn’t get closure. Kudos to volunteers who helped, these are good people!

I followed the Kris Fowler case for a couple years and heard about the other hiker who was from Ireland. I was a potential PCT hiker. It’s crazy what can possibly happen on trail. Good luck finding him! I fully agree “closure” is better than not knowing! Being a hiker you’d be surprised how far someone can walk in a day. Bring a drone! And my guess is he probably tried to find cover or shelter from the sun. So look for potential cave like features. Which makes it tougher to find him.

Sarah Jane, you have purpose. I am sure many others beside myself appreciate what you do with your platform over and beyond storytelling and off-road V-logging. Hats off to Kathy too. Cute little green alien antenna cap.

My dad passed away from aspiration pneumonia brought on by Alzheimer's disease. "Closure" is when you help the undertaker place your parent in a body bag and load him in a white van out the back door of a convalescent home after spending months watching him suffer among a bunch of other suffering old people.

Back in late 60s we were camping in Ballarat and saw Manson gang going up Goler wash that whole area is spooky I would love to help God Bless Dennis 🙏

A small cadre of drone enthusiasts would be a huge plus. I cannot think of a more worthy cause for this expertise.

Sarah...This video may be more important than any you've ever done. I hope many of the countless number of people who love you and what you do will certainly feel compelled to lend themselves to this great cause. I can't thank you, Cathy and all of the volunteers enough for what you all are doing to help Donna locate her husband and get some answers. I hope you will do a follow-up video and let us know the extent of the search project.
  • This is one of the reasons I love life. Not because of the grief and uncertainty of a missing loved one, and I wish all the volunteers the best for this weekend. But I will bet all the money I have in my bank account that when Sarah started these videos, she never thought she would be helping such a noble and necessary cause. The lesson, never assume where life will take you, just embrace the journey!

Thank you to Wonderhussy for spreading the word. And Thank you to all the people willing to travel that hard terrain and look for him. My prayers for a successful search 🙏❤️
  • @joevostoch8768
I would have the leader of the group put together a map of all the grids that get searched and publish it on their website asking the public if they go out to that area to search the unsearched areas. Be sure to note what was not searched in the grid search (didn't go into this mine or look through this cabin, etc.). What might help speed up the search is to do an aerial search with drones as well. I hope you find him!
  • I live in Ramona and I remember hearing about this, I am going to share this on our local FB page!, maybe some of our locals will show up. I unfortunately cannot as I have prior commitments but thank you for brining new light to this!.
  • @roberts.1400
I'll be going through Tecopa and DV first week of May ... If there are any follow up searches I'd love to donate time and effort to help find this fellow. I'm at a similar stage in life as Mr. Rich as I'm getting ready to retire and I'm looking for something to get involved in by donating time, money, and sweat for the greater good...
  • None of us are getting out of here alive has been a recurring theme lately. This is really kewl that you are bringing awareness to this case and the organization.
