Here's a little gardening video for you! I have a patch of turf in our garden that I need to remove to make a flowerbed. In this video I'll give you a little tip for lifting turf - basically don't use a spade!

For all its faults, when youtube is useful, it's very useful. Just spent time knocking myself out trying to lift it with a spade and thought 'surely there's a better way'. And there is. Many thanks.

I like how positive your videos are, even when things don't go as expected.

This is genius. I am doing my 80% weeds lawn in the next week or so. This will save me hiring a turf cutter. I live in Leeds and we too are blessed with clay soil. Cheers for the tip.

glad I watched this - just spent an hour of back breaking work digging up turf with just the spade -

That is exactly what I was looking for. Plus I have these tools in my shed. Happy days.
  • Great video, thank you!!! I have been edging and digging out very dry sod with a pointed spade. I've always wondered 'why a fork?' (growing up on a farm a fork was used to clean out gutters and throw hay). Now, thanks to you and this video, life is much easier. Also, I have been watering for a few hours the area of sod I intend to remove which changes the cement-like sod to a less back breaking task.
  • I went straight outside and tried this! Absolutely brilliant! Thank you. We have terrible lumpy grass. Just showed the husband we are on the rest tomorrow ЁЯЩМ

Was just about to lift some turf in my front garden - SO glad I watched this video first! Now I know what to do, I don't feel so phased by it. Thanks for a great instructional video!
  • Really helpful, especially to a beginer gardener like me! Thank you for taking the time to share.

I wanted to do some shaping on my lawn, add curves etc and for a couple of days I have struggled as it's hard work, then today I went on google to find out if there was a simpler way of doing it and I found your video and watched it right through...had a cuppa then went to try out the final curve as your instructions and low and behold I did it in half the time...I'm 76 and didn't get too tired. Your a wizard , thank you. ..Helen

Thank you SO much. Such a helpful video! You made me feel better mentioning how hard this is and about encountering rocks etc. But most importantly, I've been doing this for days and it's been killing me, and you gave me the tip I needed... the fork! Oh my gosh I never thought of that. I'm going to get a pitch fork immediately, your way looks so much better. Thanks so much for this video.
  • Finally found a tutorial covering this topic that deals with a very heavy soil like mine. Thank you!

I've watched a few videos on removing turf, as we're planning a garden. Must say, this is one of the best because of the extra ideas not mentioned in other videos. Thanks!

Used your technique today and removed around 10sqm of sod in around an hour without any aches and pains. Thanks for the tips ЁЯСН

Have a small tip or two that helped me when I opened up an area for growing potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips and beetroots and might make similar jobs a bit easier in the future. Instead of using the garden fork you can use a cheap isolation knife and cut under the grass and then remove it. You can also use a small garden cultivator instead of the small spade to remove the soil from underneath the grass.
