In this video we are discussing why Diesel Engines at times won't start without Starting Fluid or Ether as it more widely known.

Old peg has proved above and beyond starting fluid is not addictive and it dont hurt diesels
  • A gasoline soaked rag over the air intake has always worked just great for me. Just don't let go of the rag..

We had a 471 Detroit in a Taylor forklift with very high hours. You could turn the engine over by turning the fan! It had very low compression, lots of blow by and no power! It always required a snort if the temp was less than 50 deg F. An in-frame with new liners cured its addiction.

I used to be a member of a small Volunteer Fire Dept in Upstate NY, and they used to have a 1974 Dodge C 900 Pumper that had a 555 Cummins V8 Engine. The easiest way to get that Triple Nickel Engine to start was to give the intake a couple short blasts of ether. I fixed this issue temporarily by starting, and running the truck once a week for about 30 minutes. Some of the older Members didn't like this, and told me that it was not fixing the issue, but, in reality, it was fixing the issue, because it was keeping the batteries fully charged, but long story short, they made me stop running the truck on a weekly basis, and within a few short days of not being started and ran, they ended up having to go back to using ether to get the truck started. I noticed this, and went back to running the truck for 30 minutes on a weekly basis. We had a call come in one day for that particular truck, and I warned the incoming driver that the engine was already hot from having just been shut down, and that he would not have to use ether to get it started. He ignored me, and gave the intake 3 long shots of ether, turned the engine over, and blew it up.
  • Used to buy a 12 pack of starting fluid every 2 or 3 years when I was farming. Used primarily for cleaning hydraulic couplings. Great for getting oil and dirt out of those hard to reach places.
  • In my youth, many many years ago, I discovered starting fluid. Boy this stuff is great, nice flame while holding a lighter in front of it. So I bought two small cans. It was summer and out of school, I gathered several kids on my block. Created a dope ring and sprayed one can with another. Dropped a match and nobody had any eye lashes or eyebrows, when we took off running.

It has always been an opinion of mine that it is physically impossible to get a hunk of metal addicted to a substance lol.

Cosby in a can, ole Peg, making everything laugh just a little bit in a weird world.

Key wordā€” if used properly!! Ya have you dealt with the general public or truck people. Or people that say they are mechanics. Never mind the grid heaters and glow plugs they donā€™t understand them thatā€™s why they just get in and crank them over and donā€™t let them do the job they are there for. Good video if someone can learn from it. Iā€™ve been trying to get the non English speaking so the say mechanics to stop using it but no luck Someday when the blow the intake off the engine they might listen.

Had a 6.2GM that ate glow plugs like candyā€¦ A little bit of Naphthalene in the air cleaner housing worked great šŸ”„

I drove a few Fords with Cat engines that had Ether buttons.
  • Several years ago (before we had field service) a customer called in because his motor home ran out of fuel. He was trying to save $0.05 cents by getting to another station. He talked our supervisor in sending a tech out to get it running. The tech called back and said "The engine blew up". After arguing back and forth, the boss asked "How do you know it's blown up?" Which the tech replied back, "The push rods are sticking through the valve covers". The tech was labeled the "Either Bunny" for awhile. Needless to say the motor home was towed in, engine & trans dropped down to the floor. Motor home lifted up and we pulled the engine out and rebuilt it. The joys of saving a nickel a gallon.

Back in the 70ā€™s I used to drive trucks with an ether pump in the cab. Still use the stuff for the first start of the season

Some old diesels had built in ether dispensing systems for cold starts. To the annoyance of operators who have to change the ether cartridges. So if used properly ether is fine.

I've got an old Perkins that came from the factory with a Cold Start Injection system as the only winter starting aid. Works great, I've had the same shorty can in it for probably two years now. I hold the button for maybe three seconds as I start cranking, and it hits the cylinders a second or two after that, starts with no drama.

OLD SHOP GUY I USE TO WORK WITH WAS A DIESEL ENGINE BUILDER. HE TOLD ME ONE Time THE ETHER IGNITES WHEN THE PISTON IS ABOUT HALF WAY UP THE CYLINDER. SO THE PISTONS TRYNA COME UP BUT TRYNA BE DRIVEN BACK DOWN AT THE SAME TIME THUS BENDING THE ROD. WHICH IN TURN CAUSES LOWER compression AND HARDER STARTS* ESPECIALLY ON A ALREADY WORN ENGINE DOWN ON COMPRESSION ALREADY. THEREFORE MAKING IT ETHER DEPENDANT ā€¼ļø HONESTLY MAKES SENSE TO ME. R.I.P. Charlie!
  • I almost used ether on mine this winter. I have a low compression high performance built engine And it didnā€™t like to start below 20f Turns out my glow plug fuse has fractured. ā€¦ And replacing that- did a -20f start without a block heater just fine. Even if your rig has been reliable Doesnā€™t make you immune to diagnosis just like erry body elsešŸ˜‚
