   • Solar Panels for Beginners!  + Power ...

In this video I discuss my use of the harbor freight solar panels. I discuss the basics of using solar to power your RV. I am not affiliated with harbor freight and I purchased these panels on my own for full price.

People keep giving thumbs down to great videos because they come here looking for solutions to unrealistic issues and if you don't give end-all, be-all answers, they shoot you down. This video is straight forward and correct in its info and presentation. If you're looking for "more" or something different, just move on. There's no reason to give this guy a thumbs down because he didn't solve your particular problem. Thumbs up from me... You were concise, accurate and pleasant in your delivery, even with the screaming. 😉

A few years ago I went to Honduras with my wife. She saw a land crab and thought it was a tarantula. Wow did she scream and she saw a garter snake in the yard..... Great video got a Coachman pop-up and a solar system just like yours.
  • Our first solar kit was the old 50 kit that Harbor Freight use to sell. I think it was a 3 panel kit and each one was maybe 15 or 20 watts. It actually worked really well for us when we had it. It was a good start for us. Now we have 200 watts on our trailer roof plus a 100 watt Renogy suitcase panel. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to the dog house... My wife has similar phobias. Glad I saw your common sense method for mounting the charge controller! We've used this setup on our Tag trailer for a couple of years and thousands of miles. We traded our Tag in on a 24 ft Kodiak that has the same solar input as your rig. In order to use the solar panels on our new trailer, I was about to build a waterproof container and Rube Goldberg this thing. Thanks to you, I'm now in the market for two pieces of Velcro! Thanks!

This is exactly what I was looking for just bought a new camper want to make sure I can keep the 12 volt fridge cold.
  • @Ikemanark
Thanks for the video. We recently purchased the Harbor Freight panels because of the solar on the side prep also. Even though we use parks with hookups when camping, our goal is to have them keep our 2 batteries charged for interior lights, 2 slides and all 12 volt outlets in case of boondocking or outages.
  • Yes, i got the same solar panels from harbor freight to keep the batteries on my 5th wheel charged up. May mount all 4 to a frame. It also came with a string of out door lights
  • Great video. My wife is also a screamer. I have been thinking about Harbor freight for my solar needs and this video was right on time. I want to start slow and the more I learn, the more comfortable I will get.

Great video and I appreciate you taking the time to make it. 👍

I've got two of the 45 watt kits...just wanted to let you know they work great in snow..we got 7 inches 2 weeks ago, and these panels took that snow glare and turned it into watts...oh...I have 8 batteries but I'd probably need 2 more to run an AC..I'll have 690 watts of panels after the first...anyhow I'm gonna try it ...I think if I let it charge in the morning I can run the AC some in the afternoon..(I've got $2000 in it and it's almost enough...another 500 and I got this...) we have too much on the grid now and all you see are ads for high powered countertop ovens..I just rather have my own lol, after I get 2 more batteries I'll have 420 amp hours @24 volts..that's about what one will need for AC..I'm just building mine so if I can't run something I just buy more stuff till I can...I'm retired so I don't have to go anywhere much and it just gives me something to tinker around with..I figure at some point I'll get enough solar then I can have free power for whatever..I've wanted to have my own juice for a long time..without having to listen to a generator..I'm not into that unless it's a rare day..Im building one anyways though...you know, like in the Tremors movie..backup for the backup..lol

Finally tested my 2.5kw used array I got for $500 shipped. I got 10 used 250 Trina solar panels for $33 each and they are awesome. I uploaded a video and cant wait to start my cabin build. Lithium batteries will be the most expensive part so will use electric vehicle batteries. I think a 15kwh to 25kwh battery will be my starting point.

I’m starting on my quest.... got a generator... got HF solar kit to play with...but honestly. They charge an 200AH AGM... maybe get a better controller but I’m very impressed. Tested solar on side of garage...playing with it
  • Great review. Just picked up a similar trailer that’s “solar ready” this is just what I was looking for 🤙🏻

thank you for the video. i bought four of these kits to learn with and possibly use. you are the first person to identify the name of that "sae" connector. everyday i learn more about this solar stuff. here is what i learned today that i suspect is not common knowledge: 4 panels 25 watt= 100 watts. but did you know that is rated at 24 volts, even though everyone that buys these are using them on 12 volt systems. so: 12volts x 4amps = 36watts is what your battery will actually get from the charge controller. i put an amp clamp on mine today and can confirm that all 4 panels connected as one unit puts out 4 amps at 24 volts. we dont charge at 24 volts. i am still trying to understand if this is dishonest marketing. from my 4 100 panels (yes i did buy four of these kits) i got 13 volts x 16amp = 208 watts delivered to my battery. but i bought 400 watts and its all hooked up correctly i think....maybe this is common sense to everyone else, just thought i'd share.
  • Thank you for this video! I'm preparing to buy the Harbor Freight 100w system this week. I'm glad it's working for you!
  • @fleiva30
I used them when I go out camping.. they work excellent

We are first-time buyers of travel trailers. We have researched travel trailers for about two years and knew what we wanted in a travel trailer for the size vehicle we have. Last week we purchased a used one and had it hooked to our house for the first night. On the second night, we were away from our house in one of our fields on our property and I quickly realized the importance of having a generator or permanent power and that a solar panel will not run anything, just help maintain the battery. Thank you for making this video and helping us understand how solar works and AC vs DC.
