Potential Tropical Cyclone 5 is brewing in the Atlantic with a high chance of developing into Tropical Storm Ernesto within the next seven days. The National Hurricane Center issued the first advisories for the storm. Parts of the Leeward Islands, along with Guadeloupe, the British and the U.S. Virgin Islands and Sint Maarten, are under a tropical storm watch as the tropical cyclone continues building strength in the Atlantic.

As of 5 a.m. Monday morning, it has maximum sustained winds of 30 mph and is 715 miles east-southeast of Antigua, moving west-northwest at 25 mph. Current models indicate the storm will likely curve towards Bermuda, bypassing the East Coast. However, the powerful system could bring significant erosion to the North Carolina coast and dangerous rip currents late this week and next weekend.
