What Metal Detector is BETTER on GOLD? | XTerra ELITE VS Equinox!

Published 2024-07-01
Hello hello, hope you're doing well today!
Today we're out experimenting with two detectors... the Minelab Equinox 600 VS the X-Terra Elite.
Which is the better machine...? Is there an obvious difference?

I enjoy trying different metal detectors to keep things fresh and test how each works while learning their strengths and weaknesses along the way.

Metal Detectors I currently use in my videos:
In this video I was using the Minelab X-Terra Elite.
Nokta Legend
Garrett Ace Apex
Minelab Vanquish 440
Minelab XTerra PRO
Minelab Equinox 600
XP Deus II
XP ORX
(TOO MANY!)

Gear I use while detecting-
Gopro Action Camera
Cheap Amazon Hand Digging Tool
XP Pinpointer

Thank you for your time!

  • Just a little experiment between two metal detectors. (EQUINOX 600 VS X-TERRA ELITE) Let me know if I could have done anything better for the next test. Feedback is always welcome! :)

I have both the Equinox 900 and the X-Terra Elite. I love the simplicity of the Elite, and find myself using it more than the 900. Maybe because it's a new toy, but I do really like it. Great vid!
  • Gold chains are hard to detect because the little loops tend to disperse the inducted signal rather than reflect back to the coil. The higher the sensitivity, closer to the coil, and being more balled up helps in detecting gold chains (also using minimal discrimination). Both coils are DD, but the wider one I would imagine will have a wider detection footprint. Very impressive on the gold rings with that visible black sand in the soil, and not to mention wet salt. Thanks

I always wondered about that!!! Especially when the 600 disappeared and the Elite appeared. Great vid mate :)
  • I enjoyed seeing you compare the Equinox and the XTerra Elite...I would like to see how the Elite compares with another detector (or your choice) using the 8" coil on the Elite and a comparable coil on the other detector. The 8" coil on my XTerra Pro makes it a quite different detector. Thank you for your great videos.

Equinox is better but lowering your recovery after already hitting the target will only give you better results as it goes deeper. Higher the recovery the shallower it goes. If the beach is clean with no iron then run recovery at 2 all the time. If the sand is mineralised then you should be doing a ground balance.
  • I own the 600. I am very impressed with your depth test. I was a little surprised about the gold chain. I was hoping you dropped it in the whole balled up . 😊
  • I would say the Equinox 600 did better. Maybe the coil had a little to do with it? but it seemed to pick up on the samples better. I guess the only way to do a better comparison would be to get as close as you can to matching coils. One interesting test with the gold chain, would be to see if you could find a setting that does pick up on the chain. Just to see if there is a way to repeatedly get a signal that would work when your going at a normal pace swinging as you would on any given day. If there is such a setting, then you could try varying the shape and depth of the chain. ✌
  • Bigger coils usually better esp on deeper targets. Bigger question is would you dig those iron signals...Conclusion: want gold you better dig them.

Nice test, it will help me decide on a new detector, I’ve started using an old whites 9500 that I’ve had for years, works great but it’s like swinging a couple of bricks.
  • @johnhopkins2618
They both did OK but I think the equinox 600 did a smidge better, but they seem like both are good machines.👍 thanks for sharing
  • @johnhopkins2618
I think they both did well. I think the 600 might’ve performed just a smidge better but all in all they’re both good machines. Great test thanks for sharing.
  • @peterbicker8389
I would say they are both very similar. Neck to neck. I found it interesting how the Equinox 600 only picked up that gold chain in beach 1 model and beach 2 mode. If the chain is more balled up and closer to the coil that helps the machines see it better.
  • @mikeycod7377
Nice test Austin, I do not own either machine but, I definitely know that the 600 crushed it in your test. On a off topic note I went out today pulled a 1928 wheatie and a 8.9 gram silver ring 😁
  • @eliesaikaly1911
That is why you should buy nox 900 by using the 40khz mode or the nokta legend that uses the 40 khz mode too, so when buying a metal detector stick to the higher frequency one.
  • @antoniomangano
if you can, I ask you to do a test with the gold chain also in park 2 and field 2, because I noticed that the multi-frequency beach mode uses very low frequencies, whereas in park 2 and field 2 it seems to use high frequencies more suitable for chain
  • @billweser8931
I put a string on the rings when I test my detector just in case. 😊
  • @DavidB.-db2mq
I'm sorry but I know you really like the elite but I really think the equinox is slightly superior, especially with the fine gold. You wouldn't have found the chain if you had the elite. Thanks for keeping it honest 👍
  • @vancehoward4077
Seems like the equinox is all around the better detector on these gold targets on the beach.
