After the bloody action at Brawner's Farm on the 28th, Union Major General John Pope begins concentrating his Army of Virginia around the old battlefield of Manassas, where he is determined to trap and destroy Stonewall Jackson's Left Wing. Jackson's troops, however, are firmly entrenched behind an unfinished railroad along Stony Ridge, and Confederate reinforcements are fast approaching from the west in the form of James Longstreet's Right Wing. On the morning of Friday, August 29th, 1862, Pope commences the first attacks of the second day of the Second Battle of Bull Run or Manassas.

  • This battle showed problems with the commanders and leadership at the top who only cared more about their own careers then their troops which is why this battle turned into a mess. Huge miscaculations, timing and letting enemy Calvary to raid the rear and disturb communications. The Iron Brigade is the only thing that came out of this battle. Still leaders at the small command is what makes the difference in most battles.
  • The discombobulated Union command in this battle really contrasts with Grant's energetic riding around the Battle of Shiloh and proactively leading his men instead of sitting and sending out ridiculous orders.
  • Pope was clueless. McClellan is his usual snarky self, imagining that he has a spotless record and is some sort of military genius. (Only he could convince himself that his recent Peninsula campaign was anything but a failure.) No wonder this battle was a complete disaster! It's heartbreaking that so many good soldiers had to die for pompous Generals, who were quick to make light of the sacrifice by name calling and finger pointing. I'm glad Lincoln finally found the least pompous men on the planet to lead his armies. There's something likable about the quiet professionalism of Grant, Sherman, Thomas, and Meade. There was very little bickering between them. (And none with the President.) It was "Do your job.", "Okay.", and then the war was over.
  • Oh boy… it’s getting interesting now!! Pope’s got a surprise waiting for him. And FITZ-JOHN PORTER WARNED HIM!!!! General Pope’s doesn’t know is headquarters from his hindquarters…
  • Cant wait for next episode. Like CW Theme since i buyed a few Books in german in the late 90s incl W. C. Davis "the american civil war". When i played Total wars "Empire" i discovered a very good ACW Mod for Empire on Mod DB, sadly they didnt have a selfinstaller at the time but i got it running, the ACW Mod "the blue and the Grey" plus ZOR (zone of recruitment) mod was my No 1 Strategygame for years before ROME2 came out.

  • Porter's activity in this battle is so interesting, in one side he did the correct assessment and on the other he had the right to desobey direct orders ?🤔
