Duties of the 3rd Officer - A Day as THIRD MATE

Having been promoted from cadet to third officer, I thought it would be a good opportunity to share my experience in this new role.
In this video I explain the duties of the 3rd mate on board a merchant navy vessel and show you through the equipment I am responsible for.

As I we sailed north up the west coast of Australia, I was fortunate enough to spot a pod of whales. I spent ages trying to get one on camera before giving up. As you can see in this video, one breached behind me when I wasn't watching, which surprised me when I sat down to edit the video.
This video was filmed on a handy-max bulk carrier engaged on an international voyage from Australia to Philippines.

In this video, I give a very general description of each piece of equipment as I will go into more specific detail in a future video.

As always, if you have any questions related to the video or to the maritime industry or merchant navy, drop a comment below and I will answer all of your questions.

  • You guys are so lucky to be promoted directly from cadet to officer. In my country, usually after the cadetship, we go through the ratings for a few years before becoming an officer. Some companies offer a prospective officer program but are quite few.

I'm on training vessel now that's owned by the university and starting next June I'll be training on a merchant ship as a cadet. Thanks for posting the video. It really helps me getting a grasp of an idea of how 3rd officer's daily life is like.
  • Hello mate, good videos I hope we can meet at the sea as officer . very interesting to see the next videos for you👍👍👍

very useful for someone who is planning to join the merchant navy
  • How long does it take you to maintain the fire fighting equipment, and do you know if the jobs of a 3rd officer are exactly the same on a cruise ship as well as a cargo ship? (For example, still maintaining the fire fighting equipment) Also, what colleges and courses do you have to do to become a 3rd officer?
  • @mariia.chanieva
One of the fire boxes on deck was fastened with a rope. It should not be like that. It's deficiency)
  • @Brnkas369
Great video. Only complaint is that you need to cheer up a bit more when recording
