I'm so excited about my side yard garden and am thrilled to share it with you! An often overlooked space, the side yard garden has become a place for pollinators and deer. I've never had deer! But when you have the woods right across the street and build a smorgasbord up to the sidewalk, their arrival is inevitable. So I'm learning about deer repellant now!

The community that's developed around the side yard garden is AMAZING! It's unique in the area which I find both cool and slightly sad. I wish gardens were more common around here. But I think this space is inspiring my neighbors, many of whom I didn't know before the side yard garden came to life. Friendships have been made because of plants and I think that's the coolest part of all!

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

If you liked this video, please give it a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more garden content from a DIY gardener, click the bell to subscribe. That way, you'll never miss a post.

As always, thanks for your support and I'll see you in the garden!

  • It looks beautiful and everything looks so healthy! Love the trellis in the center of everything!
  • Edible rose - wow! That's new to me. I'll have to research since you say there are many edible flowers. You've accumulated beautiful, interesting plants. Thank you.

  • That "red spike" is Awesome! ๐Ÿ™Œ Maybe a couple of Arborvitae Tater Tots in that Honorine Jobert area and mix in some Skyward Pink Veronica's, if enough variation between heights together, would be nice to fill in with color. But ... not like you don't have Arborvitaes already growing there ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ plus You'll figure it out anyway! Very nice tour explained on side garden, Heather. Looks fantastic, and so do you! ๐Ÿฅฐ
  • I love your selection! You space your plants so far apart. I have them a little one a hands length apart to cover the ground. I donโ€™t have to worry about mulching anymore and the spots that are bare I plant creeping phlox and thyme.
  • WOW! Looks great. I've taken notes LOL -- I want to add a lot of those plants .... the Heliopsis Bleeding Hearts, the small Joe Pye Weed, the pink veronica, the vanity verbena .... thanks for the tour!

Hi Heather! I just discovered your YouTube channel for the first time today. So it took me forever to watch your video because I kept having to pause in order to write down the names of all your beautiful plants. Where do you purchase most of your plants? Do you order many online? I also wanted to tell you I love the name of your YouTube channel. Another favorite name similar to yours on YouTube is Howโ€™s it Growing? She has a lovely garden as well๐Ÿชป๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒผ

It looks fantastic! โค Can you point me to your video where harvested your rutabaga?

I love your garden. Where did you purchased the zinnia seeds,? I love that they are not too tall. I planted some zinnia that labeled 12 to 18 inches, but it's 3 feet tall now.

Itโ€™s beautiful! I kept taking notes on plants to add! How wide is this space?

Beautiful side garden! Do you dig out your dahlias every year or just leave them in the ground. The ones that stay short are so pretty and would do well in the front of my landscape. Everything looks good after the storms! I lost power for 12 hours and my basement flooded but it could have been worse.
  • Beautiful garden ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒบ How do you keep weeds out of your gardens?
  • @chives2019
I noticed that part of the new garden bed borders the sidewalk. Do you have problems with dogs peeing on the plants? I'm trying to find some plants that can withstand dog urine. Any suggestions?
