Okay I think a came up with a pretty good storyline for this. Dream’s friends (for unknown reasons) have all turned him away. This causes Dream to go into a depressed state. So, he begins to imagine him taking revenge on them. But he doesn’t actually want to do it. But, a part of him does: Nightmare. And that part of him becomes so strong that it basically becomes a second personality of Dream. So Sleepwalking happens in Dream’s head, and what it is is Nightmare trying to take over Dream’s body, with which he is successful. Then Night mare goes on to what Dream wouldn’t: have his revenge. But once Nightmare becomes a real thing, he made a device that keeps him in control, his spear. That’s why Technoblade had to destroy it to separate Dream and Nightmare. But doing so wouldn’t just separate them, it would make Nightmare a completely different organism. But he was still connected to Dream, so killing him killed Dream as well. But unfortunately for Dream, Nightmare had a plan to torture Dream in case this happened. The grey Dream we see throughout the videos is not Dream’s current personality, which is fighting Nightmare’s control over his body the entire time. Grey Dream is instead Dream after he has died, who has been forced to eternally watch him get what he wanted: revenge on his friends. Mic drop!!!

Plot twist: Badboyhalo is actually way powerful than any other person, but he is too kind and friendly to hurt people.
