While I had practiced my talk beforehad and knew what I was going to say, I did not memorize it verbatim, so you're hearing me speak Latin fluently from my head as I would speak about these topics in English (and thus errors and gaffs can occur, as in any fluently spoken language). 13:25 For some reason I say "pilum" (with a short vowel) instead of "pīlum," apparently confusing the word with "pilus," meaning a hair. "because they did not yet understand that they were conquered" is such a wonderfully Imperial-Roman way of putting things
  • @aaronschmidt8631
Can we just appreciate for a second that the audience was laughing at the right times and demonstrating that their Latin fluency was enough to follow and understand a talk completely delivered in Latin:P?

Imagine this guy at the airport, getting through the security check and shouting to the security personnel "LEGIONARIVS SVM LEGIONIS XIII" ! That was an amazing video by the way! Have you ever been invited in a high school Latin class ?
  • @An0niem4
The fact you make a joke in fluent latin in the 21 century and have people laughting without subtitles is amazing

Something about a Roman soldier giving a PowerPoint presentation tickles me.
  • @Noizzed
Alternate timeline where the Roman Empire conquered the entire world and the Lorica Segmentata is a ceremonial uniform.

Edict from the Emperor: send us more documentaries Rūfus!

He is not pretending. He is in fact a warrior for empire.

I adore how amazingly geeky this is! Please don't ever stop doing this. Preserving history AND amazing cosplay, whats not to love?
  • @zfranky
You bring ancient Rome back to life! Thank you!
  • @D_artistry
I started laughing when the audience member answered "tres" because all i could could think of was caesar's account of the gaelic wars and i couldnt stop smiling about it for the rest od the video
  • @antonyvibe
    Absolutely brilliant public speaking skills
  • @breakinggood3601
Love how your voice gets gentler once you become lucius again at the end hahah, its almost like you're posessed by rufus!
  • @paulolima6407
So unique, so valuable, so creative and so fun. It's the closest thing to a time machine trip straight to the Roman Empire days. Thank you! ❤
  • @kithid
That was an impressive mini lecture. Even though I don't speak latin, it was fascinating to listen and hear so many recognizable words compared how their distant permutations are used today.
  • @skipperxiv9401
Gotta love how you not only wrote and recited an entire speech in Latin, but managed to inject very natural-sounding humor into it for that extra bit of verisimilitude and humanity. Even though I needed the subtitles to understand the speech (because I know precious little Latin), I was enthralled. Very impressive!
  • @r.b.ratieta6111
As a Spanish speaker, when I watch this a second and third time, it's amazing how I begin to actually "hear" the words and have them make sense. After watching three to four times, I can "understand" about 50-70% of what's being said without reading the captions. Language and the organization of thought is a fascinating thing.

An extended tour through Romanian universities and highschools would be highly appreciated. Romanians love it when someone is making fun of their ancestors, the Dacians. I think professors would pay you to give speeches and to perform, as you performed here, in their university's Aula Magna.
