Rick Rubin is responsible for countless evolutions in music over the last 30 years. From founding Def Jam to working with the Beastie Boys, to reviving Johnny Cash’s career, to being brought in to save ‘Yeezus’ last minute. He is behind hundreds and hundreds of beloved records. Yet somehow, even after absorbing the entire history, it’s still difficult to explain the legacy of a man who doesn’t appear to do much while doing everything at the same time.

Special thanks to Justice Der for his contributions to this video.

  • I met him on an airplane when I was around 14. I didn't know who he was at first. My mom had severe anxiety from having to fly and he started to talk to us and calmed her down. He asked me what my favorite band was and I said "Slayer" and he replied "oh I've worked with them" and laughed like he had a small part. I got his name and told him I had just bought Reign In Blood and South of Heaven and he advised me I'd know his part once i got home lol Super cool guy and very very chill.
  • Rick is the epitome of when someone says "I like all genres of music", no joke, he loves music like no other. He's such a legend.
  • @warcow1115
He would actually make a great therapist even outside the artistic world. His insight, calming demeanor, and ability to listen are phenomenal.
  • @drindy5166
Brother, this is probably by far one of my most favorite documentaries let alone person of interest. You did a stellar job of putting this together. Not only does it bring such light to such a legend and history time period, it also carries such a heavy message and education that all can benefit from. 👊🧡👍
  • @iiTzoreo1
Imagine resurrecting Johnny cash and being a legend in the rap game at the same time
  • "Don't worry, I will score 40 points for you in the 4th quarter." is the best summary of kanye's creative process ive ever heard
  • @verbat1900
Whoever the hell you are, this is a incredible video. Of course anyone who listens to music knows the man's name, but I had ZERO idea of his scope of work and the artists he has worked with and build up into better versions of themselves. Thank you for the video.
  • I'm getting goosebumps talking about this, but this documentary changed my life a few months ago. The amount of growth that happened after watching this and applying it, is truly astounding. I worked extremely hard daily, to achieve my musical goals, while remembering to have fun and keep things minimal. Went from an unknown producer, to a less unknown producer lol..
  • @jacktravis2718
This man literally just V I B E D himself into excellency. I'm very familiar with rubin, and even I think he has at least a mild musical inkling for playing.
  • @mrrb_888
Rick's greatest strength is that he has remained human. He simply trusts his intuition and has no fear to speak it.
  • @Spo8
One of the absolute coolest parts of behind the scenes production footage is when you hear an idea casually tossed out that goes on to be come absolutely legendary, like Rick suggesting the a cappella start to 99 Problems.
  • @katherinekier
He’s amazing. Every time I hear him speak, and then I tap into his production archives, I think to myself, “I’m thinking too much, I’m not doing ME enough.” So inspired.
  • @ClumsySnowman
All that work AND delivering presents for kids every year by christmas day. What a guy!
  • @hthazee
this was my first dip into who rick is and I am absolutely blown away, phenomenal video
  • The amount of progress this guy made for the whole Rap genre is incredible. Prime example of not reading a book by its cover.
  • @Adrian-zd4cs
To me, he is to music, what Jeff Bridges is to movies. A physical embodiment of chill, understanding and pure love.
  • @nihbpsmcgee9246
Producing Both Thrash Metal and Hip Hop and having both become defining works in their genre is insane.
  • @tysonjankowiak
Jon Brion is another legendary one from College Dropout too Mac’s Circles. We need that
  • Such an intelligent and down to Earth individual. He will be looked up to long after his eventual death. Rick Rubin has helped some of the most talented and successful people reach their highest potential. I wish there were more people like him in the world. I’d love to one day get to meet him and thank him for his influence on my own artistic journey with music (even if I’ll always be a small creator)
  • @ustulo3488
As an aspiring music producer for the last 20 years, Rick Rubin has always been an idol and influence to me in a spiritual sense. He works purely on instinct coupled with experience. Part of being a great producer in my opinion is understanding people and their strengths as well as their flaws and getting the best performance possible through the beauty of their imperfections coupled with their talent and their presence in the moment. I think that Rick figured that out a long time ago. He is one of the all-time greatest music producers in history and has done it in several different genre's which is a testament to his approach. I also would like to say this is not only the best documentary I've ever seen by far on Rick Rubin, but one of the best on anything I've ever seen period. Well done.
