Winning a championship is a long road for any athlete but for Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr, it’s been filled with a lot more bumps and stalled with some serious injuries. But through determination and commitment, MPJ has defied odds and became an intricate part of a championship team playing along side one of the best players in the world, Nikola Jokic.
A high school basketball stand out ranked Number 1 in the nation with a direct path to the NBA as a potential number one pick was in question as back surgeries sidelined him and delivered a dark prognosis of not just delving draft stock but possibly never playing again.
MPJ went through three back surgeries since then and some days doesn’t seem at his full potential, but the 1st round pick is no stranger to doubt, and his faith and confidence have kept him motivated since day one.
When MPJ was told by a Clippers doctor pre-draft that his back injury was more severe than they first believed, the former National High School Player of the Year fell from the top of the board to No. 14 where the Nuggets scooped him up.
He went on to become the first player from his draft class’ lottery to win a championship and has cemented himself as a max contract player in the league. Through his Christian faith and devout belief in himself, MPJ describes how the adversity he faced has helped shape the player and man he is today.
And pushing aside the basketball talk, Channing couldn’t wait to get into the important stuff, starting with his light-skin connection to Michael which leads to a conversation about who represents “them” the best, as well as a talk about MPJ’s dating life. MPJ is that razor's edge mix of young hubris (maybe from homeschooling and being praised at a very young age) and humility (from the adversity of his surgeries) and I think Jokic, AG, Jamal, KCP and Coach Malone have been very good influences on him. He's definitely stepped it up in terms of effort, defense, rebounding and putting on muscle. You can tell he's evolving and learning. All the best to him.
