I left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple log cabins and structures from the timber on the land.

If you haven't already, with the amount of rain you get you should consider installing a rainwater collection system.

For the bears make sure you mark your area. By this I mean start peeing around the perimeter of your home site. Especially being a man this will go along way to keep the bears out of the sleeping area. They mark their area, you need to mark yours.

At the start the cabin looked like a little homestead from the air. A big thankyou to your neighbour for helping you out, we appreciate his contribution to the evoulution of the Wild Homestead.

James, consider getting a router and building your next door using either tongue and groove or ship lap technique to avoid cold air coming through the cracks between the door boards. And definitely make it swing into your cabin to avoid getting snowed in.

Clearing an area all around your cabin has many benefits, two important ones are it gives you a fire brake you donāt really want trees within falling distance of the cabin and it helps with spotting bears and other predators around your cabin you donāt want any surprise attacks as you step out the cabin. ššššš

Don't change the tilt on the door sill. The door will still swing in and the water will run off the sill, When we made our own sills we used to make them from Oak and they were cut and planned with the slope in them so water would run away from the house. The sills we made did have a flat spot right at the door to floor part of the sill.

Once you get your field around your cabin leveled out, you should think about investing in a proper brush hog maybe one that attaches to the four wheeler , Iāll tell you those fields grow up quick

If considering building a new door. Consider getting a router to ship lap boards. On the interior side run 2xās horizontal over the vertical lumber & trim out to the z brace. This will not only increase the strength of the door but will help seal air paths into cabin. Iād keep the sill sloped but cut a flat top where door lands/resides. Keep up the good work!

James,living 34 years on 118 acres of mountain wildness, a 1gal bottle of your urine poured on trees 3 ft. From base will keep the bears away & rain won't degrade as quickly. I found when Home depot says shipped, i normally see windows 3 weeks later. Be strong, brother. āļø
