Which of these is a mandatory addition to any Hoya collection?

2024-05-13に共有
Today is father/daughter day at Sober Plant Guy's house, with Hoyas obscura, and 'Rebecca' taking center stage. They share the virtues of being strong growers, along with being early and frequent bloomers. We take a look at these two wonderful plants, and ponder which one I consider to be mandatory for any collection--newbie or seasoned veteran.

I also address a nascent problem with one, and look to stay ahead of a potential problem with the other. Hopefully you'll find it a fun and educational repot session! (Spoiler, we have success on both fronts.)

  • In classic Sober Plant Guy style, I did forget to mention something: the flowers of both these terrific Hoya smell absolutely delightful, the H. obscura slightly less "sweet" than H. 'Rebecca.' They both last for several days ☺
  • Please, please 🙏 continue making these amazing videos...I love and enjoy each and every one of them ❤
  • I'm new to your channel, and I can already say I am enjoying watching your videos. Not only you're very informative, but also very entertaining. Looking forward to learn more about Hoyas through your videos :)

Hoya Rebecca is growing in our bedroom window, it is very nice to walk into the room and be welcomed by her perfume.

HAHAHA you are funny today. Thank you for sharing.
  • Hi Dave, Many thanks for this video as well as your sense of humor! 🥰. I don’t own either of these Hoya but as usual, after seeing your video I want both. Such beauties. I am always amazed at the growth you get out of your Hoya in just a year. You do a great job with yours! Almost all of mine do the sleep, creep and leap thing. They look healthy and happy so I pretty much just enjoy caring for them and I get very excited when they give me blooms or have a growth spurt. 😊. Take care!👌🪴🥰
  • Enjoying your videos. Convinced me to get a Sunrise (just arrived a few days ago). 🌿

I really enjoy your vids! I actually just asked the clone vs seed question today and you are mentioning it here in your video! I’m ~250 Hoyas in and learning so much from you… thank you!

Ok, Dave. I made up my mind! I want a Hoya Obscura! I don't like the H. Sunrise anymore. This is my 4th try. It's in a west facing window, good sun and as green as it was when I first received it close to a year now! Your Obscura is beautiful and won me over after putting it off for 5 years. The Penny's Treat I had at the beginning of collecting Hoya and wasn't familiar with the care so it died. It's also expensive now. That root bound mysinformation needs to die. I had the hardest time getting a large root bound Publicalyx out of a glass vase while ago. I almost had to crash the jar to get it out but poured water to soak the roots. And coco chunks and moss are the worse with the roots entangling in them. Sheesh, it's a lot to learn with Hoya type or any plant, substrate and watering. After almost 7 years I'm getting better understanding of hoyas! Thanks for sharing! Dee, NY
  • 😂 I feel so seen on the "I dropped it and decapitated another plant...I don't think about it at all". I recently did the same thing with an Alocasia.
  • @Kimbermoi
What are your thoughts on chopping 1/3 of the roots on extremely root bound plants? My itty-bitty crew of 8 hoyas are nowhere near having that kind of a problem but I've seen many videos advocating it. BTW, I have a Sunrise because of you. 😁 🇨🇦
  • I have a Rebecca living in my west window with beautiful red sunstressing. Question I got a brick of coco chips and a brick of coco cior. Do you moisten the bricks and expand them out and then let them dry out before mixing together and adding perlite?? I keep my mixture in a tote and wanted to make sure if you mix a batch at a time or a bigger batch. All of your hoyas are soooo big. I have to keep mine trimmed and give away cuttings to keep them manageable with my limited space. Have a great and blessed week fellow Iowan.

Hi Dave, just a quick question,I keep dealing with mealy bugs on my Hoya’s,is it due to overwatering or lack of air movement? I do overwater and there’s not much circulation indoors where I keep them. Sorry I know it’s hard for you to say without knowing my situation. Thanks in advance. 💚💚💚💚🪴🌿Natalie
  • Hi Dave 👋I would like to know if you "buffer" your coco husk? Thanks. I enjoy watching you. 👍
