  • As a Brit I find this slice of American history fascinating and of course that moonshining never went away.

Illegal- You got all the money for yourself.. Legal- The government taxes you!

Italy, Russia, Ukraine, it has always been legal for amateurs to distil spirits at home for their own consumption. The freedom to do so is part of their tradition and culture. And recently (1996) New Zealand decided that it, too, would relax its former restriction on home distillation, and has found that it has not lead to widespread unemployment, people are not going blind, and there has been no attempt to sell home-made spirits without a license.

After hearing what Tim had to go through to become legit, I think I've suffered a braincramp!

Moonshine is ethanol and water. Vodka is ethanol and water. The big distilleries buy corn, grain, and sugar by the boxcar load. Because they purchase everything in such large quantities, including the energy they use, they can produce alcohol for far cheaper than a "moonshiner" can irregardless of the taxes. The tax on a gallon grain alcohol isn't that much. If people could make their own liquor, it would be the profits of the big distillers that would would plummet, not the revenue that the government collects, since it is really only a pittance in the greater scheme of things. It's not about taxes, but protecting the profits of big business.

Feds talking about a Moonshiner: its all about the money Feds who are paid by tax dollars, when taxes aren't paid: wait that's illegal..... we need that money for stuff
  • @markjerob

  • @jelkel25
I want to learn how to do this (just the making, not the selling) and that's what I'm going to do when I'm an old guy, Fuck Bingo!
  • @abigbang5971
man the difference between drug dealers and moonshiners is that drug dealers don't keep it low key like moonshiners do
  • @sodalines

  • @iwir3d
See what confuses me is they say if its in a bottle with no label but the mason jar it's illegal. So you're telling me I can pour store bought alcohol into a cup to drink, and its perfectly legal but if I pour it into a jar legal alcohol becomes illegal? Or are they trying to encourage me to just drink straight from the bottle of store bought?
  • @pdwmadness
yall know its legal to distill in Missouri with out a license right? you can make up to 200 gallons a year
  • I don't think George Washington would've imagined his country would devolve so bad that we'd have to ask permission to brew their own whiskey
