The Ehlers-Danlos Society Global Learning Conference 2023. Help over harm: Minimising medical trauma in interactions between hypermobile folks and their caregivers by Melissa Williams.

In this presentation, you'll discover the impact of interactions that are experienced as physically and/or emotionally harmful in caregiving settings and explore the concept of relational intelligence for minimising harm.

Melissa (she/her) is an integrative physiotherapist, educator and business owner currently living and working on Wurundjeri Country in Melbourne, Australia.

Specialising in supporting individuals who endure symptoms of stress, pain and fatigue, Melissa has over thirteen years of clinical experience as well as further studies in therapeutic movement, mental health and social justice.

Deeply interested in her work at the intersection of hypermobility and trauma, Melissa offers tailored whole-person care that centers the body and the nervous system, exploring simple, effective and scientifically-proven ways for her clients to better manage their symptoms and find joy in moving their bodies.

Outside of her clinical role, Melissa has the pleasure of leading a trailblazing team of trauma-informed allied health professionals who are just as passionate about raising awareness about chronic illnesses and putting an end to less-than-positive experiences in healthcare.

I was severely medically abused and manipulated into signing up for shock treatment and put on heavy sendative despite allergic reactions to medicine. I’ve been physically hurt by Physical Therapists and ignored when I said anesthetic wasn’t working while awake during 6+ pulled teeth at once and a shoulder scope. I have medical PTSD because people would rather abuse a little girl than accept she has a genetic disorder she couldn’t control. So much of my life was stolen from me, but I’m ready to take it back. My HEDS diagnosis, which I had to figure out myself despite extremely obvious signs since childhood including a tethered spine and a spinal Syrnix with Atrophic scaring and hyper mobility and much more, was a freedom that helped me gain my confidante back. The UIHC hospitals abused me. I have it in records and have written admittance of malpractice.
