White Water Rafting Travel Guide - South Fork American River | California Travel Tips

Published 2010-08-01
California Travel Tips host Veronica Hill shares her White Water Rafting Travel Guide on the South Fork American River. Led by rafting guide Deryn Peck of www.OARS.com/ , this white water river rafting trip follows the South Fork of the American River β€” one of the most popular runs for beginners and families.

White water rafting trips are popular in the spring (if you're looking for big surf), or in the late summer (if you're looking for gentler, warmer waters).

American River rafting is one of the most convenient whitewater river rafting trips because it's only an hour from Sacramento.

The American River is also one of the best white water rafting destinations in the nation, drawing more than 1 million visitors per year.

The American River white water rafting season runs from spring to fall, and is the perfect compliment to a California vacation.

Our OARS white water rafting class included a delicious barbecue lunch, followed by about three hours on the river.

For a whitewater river rafting vacation, OARS offers multiple-day whitewater rafting tours on several popular California rivers, including the Merced River, Tuolumne River near Yosemite and the Upper Klamath River near the Oregon border.

I'm going whitewater rafting in Catalonia, Pallars Noguera is awesome. It looks just like this river but is very long.
  • South fork is class 2 and 3, middle fork is 3 and 4. I have done it several times both forks, and the time varies, and it depends on where you put in, lunch times, stops and etc. Whole South Fork is all day long , some areas like lower gorge are only 3 to 6 hours, depending on the outfit you travel with.

Definately recommend trying a few different companies to go with. To answer some of the others folks, yes this is a 3+ classified river. The real amount of + will be based on the amount of water being let out of chili bar dam. If you can try it on a 2000+ release day. Also dont forget there are middle fork and north fork as well...north being a bit more extreme and up to class 5 based on flow.
