Thanks for the comments Mark. At the time I had the same reaction as you, they were just being bullies. In fact if you listen closely you can hear me in the video say, “Don’t do that!”. But after thinking about it later I realized it might have been a good thing. As cruel as it seems, it’s important for bears not to lose their fear of humans. If that happens it’s only a matter of time before they approach urban areas and end up being destroyed by government wildlife management officials. Having said that, I’m sure this is not what the bullies had in mind. They were, as you said, just enjoying scaring a bear. The good news is this is a very remote area and after our work project was finished that summer, very few people would ever go there again and the bears can have the place to themselves once again.
