In our series, School Matters, we take a look at something that’s become a normal part of life for so many students in the U.S.: active shooter drills. Beverly Gardens Elementary School in Riverside, Ohio, began holding these drills shortly after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. Beverly Gardens is also one of a small number of schools nationwide that actively trains and arms some of its staff. Vladimir Duthiers shows us what an active shooter drill looks like from inside the classroom.

  • @leahcotten7563
Problem 1. Lights are not off 2. No locks 3. Slow 4. Loud
  • @sophia-hs1ns
When they are on Live: Quiet When NOT on Live: Loud
  • I didn’t expect this to make me emotional but I started to cry watching them barricade the door and hide in the corner. Growing up a fire drill was the only thing we worried about and those we looked forward to because we got to go outside. This breaks my heart
  • Haven't they ever thought that a shooter watches this and knows what they do to get inside the classroom
  • @midori6913
My classroom would’ve been laughing and screaming.
  • @sarahparker395
The fact that she is telling them to make sure they have something in their hands to protect themselves is heartbreaking.
  • I cry seeing this. No child should be going through this. But we live in very dangerous times. It breaks my heart.😢
  • @pizzaboy9
Reasons— 1: they can’t film with lights off 2: they need to show every move clearly 3: the classroom is large and half empty

When my school does lockdown my principal just says “lockdown, lockdown, lockdown” over the speaker, this principals announcement is mad long 💀
  • As a parent that is fighting for custody.. this made me cry.. seeing my daughter having to go through this at such a young age. This world is a lot sometimes.
  • I remember 8 or 9 years ago after the Sandy Hook incident, my school installed little holes in the ground inside the door frame where a metal rod was to be inserted so that even if the lock on the door didn’t work you couldn’t open the door because of the rod blocking it. I thought it was such a good idea but as a college student now looking back at my 6th grade self, it’s so sad and brings tears to my eyes that we actually had to do this and still do even in college. I still remember seeing the man with the drill, installing that tiny hole in each classroom and thinking “how smart to implement that” as an 11 year old. Now I see how sad it is that children are now accustomed to this kind of situation.
  • Teacher: “okay class, make sure you are holding something in your hand to protect yourself!” Student: holds a bad of chips (edit) guys this comment was from over a year ago and i didnt realize how many likes and comments it got SHJHAHKJHS THANK YOU!!!
  • @nathalia8319
They need to fix it, they take too long and make too much noise. Plus turn the lights off.
  • @lydiagrace1424
Is nobody gonna talk about how they didn’t how the lights off- like that’s one of the number one rules we do at our school
  • @TITacticalLife
As an elementary school principal I am terrified when I see the lack of correct practices being taught when it comes to the safety and security of students.
  • Teacher: Make sure you have something in your hands. Me: (Pulls out uno reverse card) Also me: Im going to ruin this whole man‘s career.
  • @camryn6660
How does that reporter know all their names when my teacher can’t remember my name and it’s the 3rd month of school? 😂
  • @killakilla2248
“Make sure you have something in your hands to defend yourselves” Me: pulls out glock 17 wit extendo from backpack
  • I love how the kids are very calm and serious just listening and doing exactly what the teacher is saying. The teacher is also very calm and I love how she is saying everything what she is doing. Good job❤️
