Breaking Out the Thomann FH900J Flugelhorn

Published 2024-01-31
It's been some time since I had this bad boy out of the case. Have received a lot of comments over the years from people that have told me they also bought on of these, in some cases based on my videos talking about it and playing it here on the channel. So, back by popular demand, here it is, in all its glory, the Thomann FH900J Flugelhorn !!

Oxidation marks are what you get with raw brass--they happen naturally and the luxury of raw brass is that you can choose between shining it up or letting it get filthy. Let it go filthy and it'll go black, brown, green, red. Don't worry about it at all--it seems like exactly what I'm expecting when my order arrives. Keep those black potato marks as well. They're part of the horn now. Very excited to see you gushing about this horn. I like that it seems to play well enough to have fun with it too and you make it sound great as well as it simply being a nice horn. Also, going off Thomann's site it looks like you have German shank and "normal" shank. The German shanks are 10mm and the standard shanks are 11mm, as German horns use slightly narrower bores. The site has separate listings for German shank mouthpieces which I think is very helpful, so I went and got a JK 4C with the right shank. Can't. Wait.
  • Wonderfully marvelous inscrutable meanderings through the personal involutions of philanthropy.

Can confirm as a comeback player your videos inspire me but also they're price prohibitive. Until now! I'd be so interested in taking this off your hands. Single Dad with a kid that I'm giving lessons to when I can cause she loves playing the trumpet 😇 hope you're well bud.

I was one of the ones who almost bought this flugel after watching your earlier video about it but decided not to pull the trigger lol! I currently have a Carolbrass that is a really fine player. I also have an Edwards X-19 on order but it could take up to a year before I get it. BTW, Thomann has an excellent return policy so if anyone buys this or another one of their horns and don't like it, it can be returned without any problems. Great review of this horn, Garot! I know a lot of people were looking forward to this one!

I have the fh900J raw brass model. Slowly getting a nice patina. This horn is well worth the money. I also have a Thomann pocket trumpet that is great. Will most likely get their TR 800 L MKII trumpet next. It has a beautiful engraved design on it and that is just the one I have had my eye on. Always look forward to your videos.
  • I'm taking up horns again after 50-some years. I have a Bach cornet and two plastic trumpets that cost less than $200 each. I'm thinking about buying a plastic flugelhorn. I saw a trumpet player in an orchestra of old folks in The Atlanta area and his looked and sounded good. I also have a Crimean War bugle and several other bugles. A retired reporter, I'm enjoying this but would like your opinion on the plastic flugelhorn. Thanks.

It looks cool, but not sure I would take the lac off of the horn…..But to each his own…. Really enjoying your content!

Hi! How do you compare it to the discontinued Yamaha student horn (YFH 2310)?
  • @selpingos
Hey Garot did that horn come with the "paint" on it orr raw brass. I know you kinda steel wooled it. But what was the finish when it came?
  • @ga1ianoplays772
I have a question! Does the Flugelhorn accept cornet shanks, or is it strictly for trumpet mouthpieces? Thank you for the updating regarding the horn, you’ve convinced me to consider purchasing one myself!

Those bottom caps are HUGE. Are they solid or hollow? The horn looks heavy.

I have both , the 900 and the 600G. Don´t buy the 900, the 600G is the horn to purchase. The 900 sounds dead, it is just a gimmick horn, listen to that guy. Do you want to sound like him??
