They go backwards to keep more weight in the back (side facing up hill) and helps prevent tipping over or catching the bucket and flipping

In our place all heavy trucks modified to have water tank to drip the brakes to keep it from overheating. Especially in hilly roads as most our roads.

I'm guessing the dozer backing down the sloped has to do with the oil pickup in the sump
