In 1940, Charlie Chaplin, known for doing only silent films, did a film called "The Great Dictator", introducing spoken dialogue. At the end of the film, the once silent Charlie Chaplin gave a speech so timeless and incredible, it deserves to be heard again with the eyes and ears of the world as it stands today.

This is obviously not normal content for me, but I want to thank you for giving it a chance. This touches on some things that have been on my mind a lot lately.

Welcome to another episode of "Why's this guy still under 100k?"

“Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of man, that state is obsolete”

― Rod Serling from The Obsolete Man
  • Charlie Chaplin made a career in silent films, then when he finally spoke in a film, he made one of the most important speeches ever made in history.
  • I've noticed a trend with media. They put out a false story, send hate and violence toward someone, then quietly retract it after they achieved their goals. Seldom do they ever cover the suffering they cause.

    That editing was absolutely stunning.

“There, but for the grace of god, go I.”

What people seem all too often to miss from this speech is Chaplain is being depicted speaking to actual Nazis. He is faced with people he truly abhors and chooses to speak in human solidarity, because everybody in the world, however misguided you see them as being, could be you had your life been different, and the best empathy you can exercise with those with whom you disagree is trying to prevent them from living a life you yourself would never wish to lead.

The phrase “Build bridges, not walls.” has become quite politicised these days, but it still holds worth. Be the change you want to see in the world, and be the person Mr. Rogers knew you could be.

Dude, literal goosebumps. That 80 year old speech is still so poignant.
  • @Jestajester
It made me cry, but I think we all needed this 💖
  • This just made my year! Woke up feeling hopeless and who knew Charlie Chaplin would give me a mental 180. Awesome video Jym!

I have this speech memorized almost word for word. Found it randomly and still shocks me. This and Alan Watt's What Do You Desire speeches are cornerstones in my life

If you ever do another speech based video, the Alan Watt one is an ABSOLUTE reccomend

My emotions overtake me in this moment... thank you for creating this, and sharing it. I will be sharing it as well. The world needs to see and absorb this as well!
I've spent a lot of time over the last year trying to explain to my 15 year old son, who is autistic, what is happening in the world around him. It is overwhelming. I cry. A lot. I want to tell him everything will be alright, but I don't want to lie to him. I can't say it's going to go back to normal when I'm not sure myself.
I love the message this video carries. Thank you again for bringing this into the universe. This is the message that needs to be carried to the world!

Wow, this is so moving and with how you edited it, the words hit even harder.

I used to have that speech memorized. It's one of the true great speeches of the 20thh Century.
It's been a while since I heard it...I needed this.
There was a time we believed that the day would come without dictators and oppressors. We need to work for that day once again.
