With India amid a national election campaign, its news media is in sharp focus.

Until recently it was believed that the sheer diversity of outlets ensured a range of perspectives, but now, India’s mainstream media has largely been co-opted by the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Just how did the media in India get to this point and what does it mean for the upcoming elections?

Featuring:

Few YouTubers are Becoming the fourth pillar, instead of Mainstream media.
  • After 2014, Indian media has changed its job from journalism to entertainment and acting as a BJP spokesperson. Its job is to hold the government accountable, but instead it holds the opposition and common people accountable.

I use to keep myself updated on the Indian news. Then I started noticing that there was not one single channel which critiqued the government. That was like a wake up call to see other side of the things.
